June 1-2, 2001 at Sacramento CA 2001 Outdoor State MeetThe California state meet amounts to a "super-state" meet, the equivalent of a regional championship in any other part of the US. The biggest state with the greatest number of prep track and field athletes filters all this talent into a one-class final, 27 athletes per event. These finalists come out of 10 sections of the state, with each section allotted slots in the finals based on population and past state meet performances. The talent-rich Southern Section (all of suburbia and exurbia surrounding Los Angeles) has to have two preliminary weeks of trials before the Southern Section "Masters" finals, the state meet qualifier for this section. Just qualifying for the State Meet is as difficult as winning a state championship in many states. At the State Meet, there are trials on Friday (except the 3200 meters), to whittle the fields down to nine athletes per event for Saturday's finals. That makes Saturday the greatest concentration of elite talent at any high school meet anywhere outside of the post-season national meets. Monique Henderson's 50.74, smashing the US record for 400 meters, was just one of the notable performances at the 2000 meet.
