Brown Invitational

from Larry Byrne

GODDARD STATE PARK, Warwick, RI, sunny-mid 70s, small rolling hills, brisk wind on the flats.

After many years a fixture at Slater Park (Pawtucket, RI), the 18th running of the Brown University HS Invitational was held in the wide-open spaces of Goddard State Park.

The Boys' Championship was won easily by the nationally ranked Christian Brothers of Lincroft, NJ who placed four runners in the top nine, scoring just 39 points. In some what of a surprise, a vastly improved St. John's Prep of Danvers, MA took second with 98 points, upsetting home-town favorite Bishop Hendricken who were third at 127. Tom Falvey of CBA took the individual crown clocking 15:45.8 over the relatively flat 5,000 meter course, with second-place Todd Glew (St. John's) the only runner to break 16:00.

In the Girls' Championship, the locals from North Kingstown (Wickford, RI), just edged out the defending champion Longwood (Middle Island, NY) , 87-92, with Lexington, MA a close third with 103 points. The Lexington team produced a surprise winner in Junior Natasha Roetter, who destroyed the field by over a minute, clocking 17:28 to runner-up Nora Segar (Amherst, MA) at 18:37. Looks like Ms. Roetter will be a contender for the Foot Locker's North East team come late-November.
