Southern Nevada
Division Championships

from Phil Lawton

Conditions: Warm and breezy
Course: Medium-Fast--dirt, grass, rolling desert terrain

This meet, a prelude to the Southern Region Championship races two weeks away, produced a number of outstanding performances and a couple of mild upsets. The best team race of the day involved the Sunset Northwest boys battle between Cimarron-Memorial and Centennial. Cimarron prevailed when Centennial's number three runner was DQ'ed for running off-course; otherwise both teams would have scored 34 points, with Centennial winning the 6th-man tie-breaker. The Spartans led with their one-two punch of Mordechai and Matthew Yadegar, while Josh Boedecker and Jordan Stephens paced the Bulldogs. In the other Sunset boys race, Durango, led by Chris Rebentisch, easily prevailed over Bonanza and Clark. In Sunset girls competition, Centennial won big in the Northwest race, placing six runners in the top 10. In a minor upset in this race, Natasha Wicks of Cimarron beat Centennial's Allison Carney and Meghan Mathews. The Southwest Division girls race was the most closely contested team race of the day. Bonanza prevailed over Durango by a single point with Clark a close third. Christa Avena of Bishop German, sans teammates, cruised to the individual win and remained undefeated this season.

In Sunrise Region it was Basic and Green Valley prevailing in the Southeast Division (also known as the Henderson Division). Basic's boys won a tight team battle over surprising Chaparral and a Green Valley team missing their number one runner, Joel Sanchez, who was taking the SAT test. Kolby Campbell, running the fastest time of the day, led the Wolves of Basic. Freshman Patrick Swick of Chaparral continued to impress with his second-place finish, and the Cowboys raised a few eyebrows as they managed to put three other runners in the top 10. The girls race in the Southeast Division was all Green Valley. The Gators went 1-2-3, led by Emily Eskin, and managed to put all seven runners in the top 12. The Sunrise Northeast Division races proved to be the biggest disappointment of the meet. Only Eldorado was able to field full teams. The individual races were won by Eldorado's Cordell Chee and Las Vegas' Julie Johnston.

In the Small Schools Division Boulder City proved once again that they are a first-class program. Jack Hardy, the only runner besides Kolby Campbell to break 17 minutes over the 5K course, led four teammates to a perfect score (1-5). In Small Schools girls competition the Eagles of Boulder City also prevailed, but it was left to Faith Lutheran's Nikki Peterson to record the fastest time of the day. Peterson, unbeaten in Nevada this year, was the only girl all day to break 20 minutes for 5K. Christine Barrett of Faith Lutheran managed to finish second in the race, outrunning Boulder City's pack.
