The Recruiting Game, Part 6

Little tips
to getting what you want

by Donna Dye

TIP 1 -- Don't be bashful, take the initiative

Don't be afraid to contact college coaches especially if you are in the average range for your event. Colleges can't possibly check out all student athletes-they don't have the time nor the money. And, the fact that you show interest in their school counts a lot. Colleges like to know who is interested in them; why waste recruiting time and money? But when you contact them, you need to say more than "Here I am." Be prepared to tell them why they should be interested in you. List out your athletic, academic and character qualities. Do a one page maximum summary that you can send, fax or email to them. Also, let them know you did some research on their college. For example, you might do a cover letter to send with your resume. In the cover letter you might congratulate them on their good season. Or, you might discuss something about the team, the program or the school that you noticed on the website. Be creative but also be honest and sincere.
