Great American
Cross Country Festival

A DAY OF CONTRASTS -
A DAY OF CHAMPIONS

by Donna Dye

Finally after 2.+ inches of rain, one flooded park, and lots of waiting -- the sun came out, the temperature went up and the races began.  McAlpine Greenway park was the site of the Great American race sponsored and produced by Rick Hill and his family of Charlotte, North Carolina.  We have to thank Rick for bringing us the Great American Cross Country Festival.  For before this race, all there was was talk about who should be on top of the rankings.  Rick took on the massive and expensive job of putting together a fabulous opportunity for high school cross country teams to meet, to compete, to shine.  And shine they did!

John Dye meets  Farragut team from Knoxville TN during rain delay - make that a flood delay!

Rick Hill gives John Dye the new race schedule
Summerville SC varsity parents wait out the start of the race.  Smart idea to bring those chairs!  Their girls ran in the invitational and placed 15th.
Samford University's Coach McWaters and his crew watching, evaluating, spotting from the sidelines.
Before the races, athletes relax, get ready
and talk about what might be.
Hopi AZ girls come East.
Mountain Home AR sr Eric Gross (center) and coach Clint Pevril (R) with John Dye.  Eric finished 19th at 15.51.7 in the Race of Champions.
And the waiting for the right race, the watching, cheering and clapping begin.
Southeast Raleigh NC, serious DyeStat fans they say, watch for the boys in the open race and the girls in the championship race.  Both the boys and the girls did well against the best of the best in cross country.   The boys were 21st and the girls 19th.  Great effort!
South Davidson NC parents watch their daughter's finish.
Fans at the finish line.
