(Nine coaches represented: 10 points for 1st--1 point for 10th)

After three weeks of the season, it appears that the predicted parity among boys teams in the southern part of the state has materialized. Cimarron-Memorial has looked better than expected with the emergence of Mordechai Yadegar and his younger brother Matthew as two of the top runners locally. Durango, led by Chris Rebintisch and Lucky Wenzel, placed 5th--and first among Nevada teams--at the Las Vegas Invitational (LVI) on 9/10 and been "up and down" in dual/tri meets but has generally lived up to its early billing as a team to beat. Basic looks vulnerable due to lack of depth; however, Kolby Campbell of Basic, who placed second (behind Lino Flores of Rubidoux, CA) at the LVI, has not lost otherwise. Centennial, led by Josh Boedecker (6th at LVI), has shown surprising depth and looks like a State contender. Boulder City, winner of the Kingman Invitational in Arizona (also 9/10), also blew out Durango in a week three tri meet and has shown it can compete with and beat most 4A teams in the area. Individually, freshman Patrick Swick of Chaparral is living up to high expectations; he placed 4th at LVI and has run with the "big dogs" during the week (beaten only by Mordechai in three tri meets).

Green Valley's girls placed second to Tuba City (Arizona) at LVI and is still the team to beat in Nevada. Emily Eskin, winner at the LVI, and teammates Jackie Favreau, Lindsey Harris, and Katie Hughes are all front-runners. Centennial and Foothill are two teams that look better than expected. Both teams are deep in talent and young--no seniors. Meghan Mathews and Allison Carney of Centennial and Deann Bradshaw and Beth Stoner of Foothill have led their teams so far. Boulder City--with Kristie McRea, Jackie Denning, and Heather Moralez their top three--has also looked strong early. Individually, two 9th graders have led the way among the girls: Christa Avena of Bishop Gorman is undefeated, having bested Eskin of Green Valley in a tri meet. Nikki Peterson of Faith Lutheran, winner of the small school division race at LVI and three tri meets, is also undefeated.
