Highlights by John Dixon

Calvin Redden and Nicole Ireland led the Mojave North Las Vegas team to a sweep of the team titles in the Nevada 4A state meet.

  • Redden swept the short sprints in 10.84 and 21.50 and anchored the 4x100 in 42.21.

Highlights by John Dixon

Great 4A boys triple jump competition hampered by windy conditions. Valley HS junior James Sims won the competition with a 50'02.00 jump aided by a +3.0mps wind. Fallon Churchill County senior Aarick Wilson now holds the new state record as his 50'01.50 second place effort was with a legal wind. Both eclipsed the old meet record of 49'00 set in 1989 by Earl Montgomery. In fact, third place winner Anthony Park from Las Vegas HS also broke the old record with a legal 49'02.00.

The meet was dominated by the strong sprint squad of Sam Germany's North Las Vegas Mojave Rattlers. Mojave captured the boys and girls team title, easily defeating Sparks Reed HS. Senior Calvin Redden was the workhorse for the boys as he placed 1st in the 100 (10.84), 200 (21.50), anchored the winning 4x100 (42.21) and placing 4th in the 400 (51.09). Mojave also had gold medal performances from senior Jarquan George in the 800 (1:56.43) and senior Elijah Smith in the HJ (6'09"). Mojave also won the 4x200 (1:28.53) and the 4x400 (3:21.50)

Senior Nicole Ireland capped off her high school career with a 4 gold medal performance for Mojave. The University of Alabama bound talent, won the 100 (12.06), 200 (24.28), set a new Nevada State Meet Record in the 400 (54.67) and the 100HH (14.48). Her closest race was the 400 as she edged out Las Vegas Centennial's junior Shameka Davis (54.78).

Henderson Silverado's Lara Saye won the shot (43'02) and the discus (150'06) becoming the meets only other multiple winner.
