As expected, the Idaho State Meet was full of record performances, thanks in part to the great weather. However, Saturday's heat also caused some problems. With the temperatures in the low to mid 80s, athletes and spectators were fighting over what little shade was available.

The Meet started Friday with finals in the 3200, Medley Relay, and some field events.

The A1 Girls 3200 started off as a tactical race and finished as a 100m sprint between Hillcrest's Janae Johnson and Jerome's Dusty Schvanevelt. Johnson made a bold move at the start of the 5th lap by sprinting the first 100m of that lap and nobody responded. However, with 600m to go, Schvanevelt started to make her move and actually passed Johnson on the home-strech, but Johnson came back and even pulled away with 10 meters to go. Johnson would also place 3rd in the 1600 on Saturday.

Jenny Liou of Moscow defended her 800 title in a slow but very tactical race. Centennial's Megan Johnson put on a sprint with 200m to go but Liou held her off.

Liou tried to win the 1600 in the first 800m by setting a blistering pace, but no one went with her, and Skyview's Jenny McPherson picked up the pace with 300m to go and won handily with Liou out sprinting Janae Johnson for 2nd. McPherson's victory helped lead Skyview to the Girls' team title.

The sprint events went as expected with Highland's Aubrey Latimore winning the 100m and 200m and anchoring Highland's defending 4x100m champions.

Injuries and sickness highlighted Friday and Saturday. Freshman sensation Donavan Kilmartin, of Eagle High, won an exciting Long Jump competition on the last jump of the day, and then ran over to the High Jump to win with a jump of 6'10", just missing 7feet on all three of his tries. However, he sprained his ankle during Pole Vault run-throughs and had to scratch from the Vault and High Hurdles. However, it did not stop Eagle from winning the Boys' title by 32 points.

The expected duel between Tyler Williams of Centennial, Terry Allen of Borah, and Morgan Anderson of Highland in the A1 Boys' 1600 and 3200 did not materialize the way it was thought. Williams and the flu all week and collapsed during the 6th lap of the 3200 and while Allen led with a slow pace, Anderson chatted with teammates in the stands and held-off a fast closing Bobby Haymes of Vallivue in an all out 300m sprint. Allen faded to 6th. Anderson ran 11 seconds slower than what Allen had run at the Disrtict III qualifiers the week before. Williams was given IVs for rehydration, but he could not run the 800 leg of the Medley Relay Friday evening. However, Williams came back to win the 1600m in Saturday's heat out-kicking Haymes. Allen again led the entire way until the last 300m, and Anderson had nothing left after a 3rd place finish in the 800 and finished well back.

Timberline's Tara Schwager, the Long Jump champ and defending 400m champ, had to withdraw Saturday from the 400m and 200m with a foot injury after a 4th place finish in the 100m

Also, in the A1 Girls, Freshman Pole Vaulter Julene Bailey, of Skyview, set a new state record by 2.5". The record was previously held by Sadie Sweet now being coached by Stacy Dragila at Idaho State University.

The A2 Girls finished the same way it did last year with Bishop Kelly needing to win the 4x4 in order to win the team title....they did! Salmon won the Boys' on the strength on a 1-2 finish in both hurdle races.

As expected in the A3 Girls' Homedale's Jessica Zatica won the 100HH, 300H, the High Jump, and the Triple Jump, and she did it all in record or near record fashion. She won the HJ and 100H for the 4th year in-a-row. She also set a new overall state record in the Triple Jump by over 1foot(39'2.5"), and she has only Triple Jumped for 3 weeks!!!!

Nampa Christian won the Girls' A3 on the strength of Freshman sensation Danielle Pridgen who won an unprecedented triple of the 200m, 400m(breaking the 14 year old overall state record by .5 of a second), and the 800m. There is only one event between each of those(with 4 races) starting with the 800m. What a feat!!

The A4 Girls had the excitement of the Wiggins sisters and Tracy Copher battling it out in the 800, 1600, and 3200m. However, Ann- Marie Wiggins could not pull off the triple as Kootenai's Tana Dooney won the 800m, with Ann-Marie getting revenge in the 1600. Raft River won both the Boys' and Girls' team titles.

With all of the sensational Freshman in the State, The Idaho State Meet should bring plenty more excitement over the next 3 years......Hopefully!!

With the weather expected to be in mid to upper 70s, there should be some exciting races and records at Boise State this weekend. There were several Dyestat marks set at last weekend's District qualifers throughout the state.

Some of the best duels will probably be in class A1. The Girls' sprints should be very interesting. Highland's Aubrie Latimore set the state record in the 100m(12flat) and 200m(24.80). She is also the anchor of Highland's defending championship 4x100 relay as well as the Long Jump. She will be challenged by Jerome's Alicia McLimore and Timberline's Tara Schwager in the 100 and 200, while Schwager has the state best this season in the Long Jump. Schwager is also favored in the 400m.

Look for Jerome's Dusty Schvaneveldt to defend in the 3200 with several ladies from the Boise area, led by Robin Witcher, and Highland's Sarh Vanwart to challenge through the first 6 laps.

Skyview Sophomore sensation Jennifer McPherson set the District Three 1600m mark with a 5:09 last week and appears ready to break the 20 year-old record of Bishop Kelly's Ellen Lyons(5:08.4).

The 800m will be a repeat battle of last year's final between Moscow's Jenny Liou and Centennial's Megan Johnson.

Look for Boise High's Oliva Greenwood to win both 100m HH and 300m H.

Look for an exciting duel in the Boys' 1600 and 3200. Borah's Terry Allen nipped Centennial's Tyler Williams last week in the 3200(9:31.4 to 9:31.5). Williams came back winning the 1600 with Vallivue's Bobby Haymes finishing 2nd and Allen 3rd. However, State Cross Country champ Morgan Anderson is ready to fight both even though he may be hurt by the 800 on the same day of the 1600. Williams, Allen, and Anderson also expect to fight it out in 800 leg of the Medley relay.

Freshman sensation and National Junior Olympic Decathlon champ Donovan Kilmartin is poised to win the High Jump, Long Jump, and Pole Vault, as well as placing in the top 5 in the High Hurdles.

Elsewhere, in the A3, Homedale's Jessica Zatica(5th place in the National Indoor Championship for Pentathlon) looks poise to win both hurdle events, the High Jump, and the Triple Jump. And in the A4; the Wiggins sisters(Ann-Marie and Jessica) are in position to finish 1st and 2nd in the 800, 1600, and 3200. However, expect Council's Traci Copher to Challenge both of the sisters.

The team titles will be battled in the A1 by: Centennial, Eagle, and possibly Highland and Sandpoint for the boys. While in the Girls, look for Skyview, Meridian, Highland, and defending champs Jerome. In the A2 look for Bishop Kelly and Grangeville to battle again for the girls; while Bishop Kelly, Snake River, and possibly Priest Lake and Salmon for the Boys titles. In the A3 look for Firth's boys and Ririe's Girls doing battle with Nampa Christian. While in the A4: Midvale, Idaho City, and Genesee all look strong.
