2000 Texas State Meet
Day 1 Highlights

Before a brilliant lightning storm stopped proceedings late in the evening, there were fireworks on the track and field to entertain the big crowd at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin. Some highlights::

  • 4A Boys 200: Texas has seven of the US top 10 and five of them were in this race. Hometown soph Brendan Christian, fastest US sophomore ever with his 20.72 in the regional, was featured in pre-meet coverage in the Austin American Statesman. But it was Dickinson's Leon Bookman on top at the end of a blazing sprint in US#1 20.67 +0.5. Austin Reagan's Christian 20.78 and third place San Angelo Lake View sr Saidric Williams 20.91 made it three runners under 21 seconds.

  • 4A Boys PV: The pole vault pit is less than a pole's length from the backstretch stands, and Wolfforth Friendship jr Sage Thames had the crowd roaring with jump after jump without a miss -- all the way to US#1 17-6.5. This broke his own Texas 4A record (16-7) by almost a foot.

  • 4A Girls LJ, TJ: Bay City sr Chandi Jones doubled in US#1 20-10.25 +2.9 and US#5 40-9 +1.5. This made Jones only the second girl in Texas state meet history to double in the same events four straight years. She is also a basketball star and will play hoops and jumps next year at the University of Houston.

  • 4A Girls 400: Lancaster freshman Jerrika Chapple 52.65 - US#2.  Pictures of Chapple's big debut on state meet stage.

  • 4A Boys 300H: Sweetwater's Willie Amos, a national champion rope jumper, became US#1 in this event with a fine 36.29 victory. Amos is also a star halfback in football.

  • 4A Boys 800: Keller sr Daniel Pessing took the lead early and held off a good field the rest of the way in US#6 1:51.85.

  • 4A Boys 400: Houston Forest Brook's Ivory McCain upset US#3 Pflugerville Connally sr Jonte Buhl in US#4 46.73 to 47.00. Buhl drew lane 8 in Texas' random seeding and when McCain made up the stagger it was too late to recover. Pictures

  • 4A Girls Hurdles: Port Arthur jr Ranysha LeBlanc doubled in US#1 13.51 +1.9 and US#3 41.29.  Pictures

  • Girls Throws: Red Oak fr Michelle Carter, daughter of a famous Texas thrower, made a spectacular debut on the Texas State Meet stage with a double in US#5 48-5.25 and 144-0. Michelle's dad Michael is the all-time US record holder in shot put (81-3.5) and also played football for the San Francisco 49ers.

  • Girls HJ: Unheralded Buda Hays soph Helen Breyfogle upset US#2 Natassia Vice at 5-8. Vice was trailing after needing three tries to make 5-8 and then was disqualified for using a 2-way radio to communicate with her coach between jumps.  Pictures
