NIC vs. NSI

Who won the battle of
national indoor championships?

by John Dye

Who won?  Nike Indoor Classic (NIC) at Bloomington IN or New Balance National Scholastic Indoor (NSI) at New York?

The answer depends on your point of view, and I will not attempt to answer that question.  But for those who want to try, here is some fodder for discussion.

NSI had a very slight edge in number of "winners" when the performances of the champions of each meet are compared.  NSI had a much bigger margin in "team" scoring as if it were a dual meet and in number of entries (1198 to 826).

Of course, we know that performances in different meets cannot be compared exactly.  The tracks are different (the New York Armory is banked and Indiana U. is flat) and the competition is different (NSI had deeper fields).  But don't you think the meet managers made the comparison?  So we can too.  See the table below for details.

Are two meets better than one?  Having two meets at once forces coaches and athletes to choose, diluting each meet and depriving anyone from earning an unambiguous national title.  On the other hand, two meets give more athletes an opportunity to shine at the national level.  The Question of the Week on DyeStat's front page for the past 2 weeks asked if  having two national meets was good (more opportunity) or bad (dilution).  More than 10,000 votes were cast on-line.   "Bad" had a lopsided lead of up to 90 percent in the early voting, but "Good" came from behind in the second week to win, 54 percent to 46.   It is interesting that the actual meets were run in the middle of the voting - in other words, Bad led before the meets and Good afterward.

The following table compares the number of winners (first place performance), "team" score (scored as a dual meet to 6 places 10-8-6-5-4-2-1), and number of entries (based on names in the results of each meet).   The best score in each event is shown in red and the results are summarized at the top of the table.
