Gloucester MA smashes US record by 11 seconds!

Springfield HS, set at NSI March 15, 1998.

Running a powerful, dominating race from start to finish, Josh Palazola 3:04.1, Ngai Otieno 49.5, Shawn Milne 1:56.4, and Tristan Colangelo 4:09.9 beat the old record by 11 seconds (splits by Walt Murphy). Gloucester pulled away from an elite field, which included PA's Cardinal O'Hara (10:17.33), NY's St. Anthony's (10:18.58), NJ's CBA (10:22.20), and NY's Bishop Loughlin (10:23.61). Oakton, VA finished sixth overall, winning the second heat in 10:27.62.
800 leg Shawn Milen said that "when I looked up and my split, I knew we were ahead of the record, but I couldn't believe by how much." Colangelo said he was very pleased with his mile. "I really can't believe I ran a 4:09 by myself. This really gives me a lot of confidence for my race Sunday." (running in the Nike Indoor Classic mile against one of the best field's in a long time.) "I ran 4:11 at Dartmouth by myself, and it seemed easy. I like to race against people. If I get in the race there (Nike), I can gut it out like everyone else."
Colangelo will fly to Indiania tomorrow to run the mile.. His three DMR teammates will remain in New York to continue individual competitions..
