Kiara Adams, Westminster MD,
finished 3rd, but wants more
by William Vaughan
Kiara Adams a senior at Westminster High School in
Maryland finished third with a throw of 41'10" at the National
Indoor Championship. In addition to her athletic skills, Kiara has a GPA
of 3.75 and is over 1150 on her SAT's. Still, Kiara is not satisfied.
"Forty one feet ten inches might sound great to some," she says,
in a tone which implies it is hard for her to believe everyone does not
see things as she does, "but to me it was not a great throw. I didn't
give it my all-I haven't learned to yet. I am capable of more both
athletically and academically."
If this sounds like Kiara does not work hard, nothing
could be further from the truth. Kiara is an extremely dedicated young
lady who is determined to do well. It is because of who she is and what
she has accomplished both academically and athletically that a number of
schools have made nice offers. The schools range from Rutgers and Monmouth
to Buckenll, University of Maryland, College Park, University of Maryland
Baltimore County and Rider.
Amazingly enough, until 18 months ago, Kiara had never
thrown the shot. More important, she looks to her mother as a role model,
a mother who is intelligent and bright but is completely out of the
athletic loop. Suffice to say, Kiara does not come from an athletic
background. However, she does possess some natural ability-ability which
caught the eye of the track and field coach as she casually tossed the
shot one day while waiting for a friend on the track team. The rest is
history.
This spring, Kiara will continue to train and condition
determined to improve her shot put record. She also has her eye on
something else she's never attempted, throwing the discus. There are
coaches up and down the Atlantic Coast eager to see what she accomplishes
with the discus. This spring, along with learning the discus, Kiara will
work to throw 47' in the shot put. Her coach thinks she is more than
capable of doing just that. And he, like others, is looking forward to
seeing what she will do in each event.
And with her first taste of the indoor national's, Kiara
indicated she is "now headed for the outdoor nationals." One
thing is certain, track and field fans will be seeing much more of Kiara
Adams and Maryland just may have another national champion right in our
back door (as if we have never had one before). Good luck Kiara.
