All the above have been visitors to San Diego for the Foot Locker Finals during
their prep careers - can they return to dominate the top end this February in San Diego
at the USA Junior Women's Championships?  We think so.

The top Eight finishers are predicted in order below, with a “B” group athletes who are on the cusp of that top group, and we would not fall out of our chair if some of them moved up into a position on the team. The “C” group are those who appear to have the ability to finish in the top fifteen or twenty on a special day. The Women’s event features some very, very high quality high-schoolers mixing it up with a good group of Collegiate first year runners.   Again, it is our assumption that the top six will be selected for the US World Team, with that wording on the USATF site adjusted this week once already.  (National Team Processing - click on selection procedure)

1. JORDAN HASAY (San Luis Distance Club/Mission College Prep High School) - Defending Champ looks ready to roll, having gone back to the drawing board this year and last coming into this meet after less than totally satisfactory races at the December Foot Locker prep series. Last year she came into this meet in Colorado and blasted the field two months after a tenth place Foot Locker finish, and this year she attempted to blaze away from the San Diego prep field and ended third while collared in the last mile. A 9:23.90 3k on the track last weekend has everybody’s attention, with minimal interest in the international trip off this run probably her only motivational issue here. As it has rolled down the pipe fast for this young star her camp picks and chooses a bit more carefully, with a renewal of a fascinating rivalry with the Kenyans established at the World Youth Games last summer probably this year’s long-term goal at the World Junior Track Championships in Poland in July.

2. ALEX GITS (Stanford) - Minnesota prep moved right into the farm in style, accompanying her Championship squad to the NCAA Finals, placing 51st with a series of races through the conference and regional meet that show Hasay will have to be ready to roll here. Sub 20:30 best for 6k over hill and dale.  10:44.01 State 2A 3200 Champ and 16:50.47 5k on the oval for second at the US Junior Championships last June.

3. EMILY REESE (Unat/Chambelle HS, Ga) - Junior Olympic Champ this past December has had a great prep running career, with four state titles and quick bests on the track with a 4:47.05 1600 and 10:16.05 for 3200 meters. Last trip to California was a winner, with big wins at the USATF Track and Field JO’s over 1500 and 3000 meters last July in less than optimum weather conditions.

4. KAUREN TARVER (Unat/Serrano HS, Phelan, Ca) - Very tough competitor who surprises with her tenacity when she has to. Four time Foot Locker National CC Finalist among the preps, with ventures out into the steeplechase last summer where she earned a trip to the Pan Ams and medaled in the barrier and water event. Has clocked 4:48.38 for 1600 meters and was third in this event two years ago to earn the trip to Japan. Close to home she will be solid.

State Division I CC Champ and second in State 3200 to Hasay with 10:23.31 best. Foot Locker National finalist this past December and recent sub 17:20 5k road effort. Another runner fairly close to home here.
