Recap by Doug Speck
On Saturday morning, September 15th, over twenty schools came to Rosemead HS in the San Gabriel Valley for the DyeStatCal featured meet of the weekend, the 26th Annual Rosemead Invitational on their three mile campus course. On a pleasant morning with all the racing action over by 11:00 the weather was a tad warm near the end, but most of the races were held under perfect conditions, with personal bests falling big-time for a ton of the athletes involved. The flat grass, dirt track, and cement Rosemead HS course has a large grass loop, once around the track, over to and around a park area twice, back to the original field for a loop, and onto the track for 300 meters to the finish. Spectators can observe the athletes with some casual walking at at least four or five points during the events, with a small crowd of from eight to eighty in age meandering from spot to spot as the fields came close by. It was a fun morning with some fine athletes involved, some great competition in the different events, and some names that we will be hearing down the road this season come championship time. The meet had an abundance of volunteers and lots of people were home by noon with everyone on the team having competed in a good meet. With forty-deep medals in every race a lot of rookies were sold on the sport as they walked around after their race with their award around their neck and a smile for their friends. We are looking forward to the next edition in 2008.
The Junior boys started the morning off bright and early at 7:40 a.m., with enough last-minute entrants in the suddenly popular meet to leave even a veteran observer such as ourself a bit off, as that Rosemead High leader out front sure looked good. Turns out it was Chris Rivera from the strong Granite Hills High program in Apple Valley leading the pack, and edging away eventually to a 100 meter win at 15:47. Later Chris indicated that was just short of his best time, and he had hoped for more company up front, but enjoyed the meet and competition. With Barstow in Granite Hills’ League Chris mentioned the need to get it up to speed to run with the annual championship level squad the Aztecs put on the course each year, with the need for his squad to come up with some depth after their fourth runner.
In the Girls Junior race, the Montebello duo of Sesma and Lopez led early, but tall Nicole Gassner of Alta Loma, one of a number of winners this day who indicated they had done some serious training this summer, eventually moved up and past during the second mile to a 19:33 win. The quick course this day added to the problem some like Nicole had of achieving their seasonal goal (under 20 for the Alta Loma runner) one of their first meets out, so it is back to the drawing board.
The Boys Frosh group showed what good middle school programs can do for your ninth grade class. Fit looking Robert Sager (Granite Hills, Apple Valley) continued his school’s sweep of the male wins in this competition with a good run here, racing away early to a nearly one minute 17:08 victory, and two other teammates in the top six places. Sager has run on a middle school sponsored team over the last two years in sixth and seventh grade, and spent some serious summer training time with the high school varsity while potential frosh athletes at many other schools were trying to figure out what this sport cross-country was all about. Unpressed most of the event, keep an eye on the name, as Sager will help his school’s varsity and develop into a real star in future years.
The Girls Frosh contest had Rowland’s Priscilla Llanos eventually edge away from Schurr’s Navarette and the field to a fine 18:52-19:33 win over the Schurr first year runner. Another quite experienced first year prep, Priscilla has run for the last year with the Walnut based Road Runners Track Club, racing all the way to the National Junior Olympic competition at Mt. San Antonio College in July after a spring age-group season. With quick 4:59 1500 and 10:58 3000 meter clockings last spring’s track season, Priscilla will be among the area’s better ninth graders in the fall and during track season.
The Boys Soph race had the biggest pack in attendance near the lead for a good part of the race, before Steven Melena (Eastside, Lancaster) pulled away after two miles to a 16:20-16:28 win over Jayson Perez (South El Monte). Part of a running family, with brother Jose an Antelope Valley HS star and now at UC Riverside. Eastside is a new school in Steve’s attendance area, with students through the eleventh grade this school year. Melena was runner-up last weekend at the Colton Invitational at this tenth grade level, and indicated after the race that he hopes to make it to the CIF Finals this year after missing out by one spot in 2006.
Local star Brittnie Munoz (Rosemead), with a bouncy half-milers stride up off her toes, raced away from the Girls Soph field on the way to her 19:09 win. The 2:25 800 meter runner from last spring has done some good running during the summer with her team, and indicated her best last year was 19:51 here. Second was way back at 20:44 in this event, with the locals having plenty of time to concentrate on cheering for their star before anyone else came by near the end.
Phillip Benavides of Alhambra had bested a good field at the Don Bosco Invitational the previous weekend with a 15:11 run, so he was the favorite here, and spoke in local papers of hoping to gain some respect in the eyes of the experts early this season. Phil sat just off the lead early in the race, with Nick Kelly (Granite Hills), a 4:24 1600 runner, and Ricardo Rodriguez (La Puente) out a few meters in the early running.  After a 10:08 first two miles Benavides put the hammer down, as he later indicated was his plan today, and raced away with a 5 flat final mile on the way to his 15:08 win. A Southern Section Division I individual finalist last November in this sport, Phil stated he had a simple goal this fall, “To make State.” Confident, and having done a good amount of work over the summer, his development will be interesting to watch.
The Girls Senior event had a good group up front for the first half-mile around the first grass field and on to the track, but it was there that the eventual winner, Lenore Moreno (West Covina), planned her move, and she started to edge away. The short, snappy striding local star raced away to an eventual 18:45 win with Calvary Chapel’s Molly Litherland next at 19:21, as five here went under the twenty minute barrier. Moreno followed the trend of about all the champions here, with a serious summer of preparation, and she spoke of the need to be on her horse all the time with the talented South Hills group her league rivals.
As we mentioned above, a nice morning, well run affair, abundance of volunteers, very visible course for the spectators, and over 300 medals awarded helped to add up to a great meet. Congrats to Rosemead High School and we at DyeStatCal had a lot of fun being involved with the Twenty-Sixth Annual.

Nice Runner Award:
Last Saturday at Rosemead Invitational a few teams apparently showed up last minute and one girl from a local school that appeared to finish farther back in a race asked if there were any more wristbands available. Because of all the teams the wristbands were so popular the stock was depleted. Victor Serrano of host Rosemead High was near the finish line helping after his race and heard whom I think was a senior girl who didn't get a medal ask if she could have a wristband. There were none. She said OK, and started to walk away with sweat streaming off of her as she knew she gave the race her all and headed for water and the cool down jog. Victor said he found one, which appeared to actually be his, and handed it to her. You would of thought it was the overall first place trophy. She put it on, said thanks and walked away proudly like she couldn't wait to share the moment with her teammates. There are many, many stories of good in our sport. We just need to share them more often. Try your best, work as a team and show respect and sportsmanship! -- Anonymous.

Phillip Benavides (Alhambra) - Boys Senior

Winner Interview by Doug Speck
It looked like under 15:10 for the finishing time after a 10:08 first two miles. Did you have a strategy in mind that included racing the last part of the course hard today?
PB - I wanted to relax the first mile, and see where we were. I could hear footsteps close behind after the mile, but the goal was to run a very hard third mile today.
What are your thoughts on the win and the time?
PB - My coach wanted a sub-15 today, but I am happy with the personal best of 15:09.
During the summer how much running did you do?
PB - We do about 50-60 miles per week in the summer, and about 30-40 per week during the season. This year we will keep the mileage a bit higher during the season.
We read on one of the boards that maybe you did some running with the East Los Angeles College group this summer?
PB - Yeah, I did some runs with them and those were some good workouts.
Last year you reached the CIF Southern Section Finals in Cross Country. What is your goal this year?
PB - My goal is very simple, to make state.
You had track times of what, 4:26 and 9:42 this past spring, what are some of your goals there this year?
PB - I was a bit disappointed last spring with those times, as I had run 4:27 and in the 9:40's as a sophomore. We tried some new stuff in training in track last year and it did not work as good as we wanted it to, so now we have rethought it and are sure the senior year will go much better.

Race Winner Interview  by Doug Speck
What was your time today?
CR - I think it was about 15:45.
Is the time a personal 3 mile best?
CR - No I have run 15:36 for the distance.
What are your thoughts on the race?
CR - I felt it was a good, solid effort. I kind of hoped for more competition. There were some solid runners, and it was a fast course.
What place did you take in your League last year individually?
CR - I think I was about tenth place.
What are some of your goals for this year?
CR - I would like to run a sub-15 somewhere along the way. I would like to place top three individually in the League Finals, and have our team go to the CIF Finals.
What times did you run in track last year?
CR - I had a best of 2:00 for the 800 and 4:27 for the 1600, where I was second in league and made it to the CIF Prelims.
How much running did you do this summer?
CR - I met with team members each day and we ran about 8-14 miles.
Who is the competition in your local area?
CR - We have Barstow in our league and they are very solid. We hope to be able to compete with them. We are still a young team and solid runners one through four. We are looking for our 5-6 and 7 runners to move up and still searching out who that will be.

Robert Sager (Granite Hills, Apple Valley) - Boys Frosh

How much running have you done prior to High School?
RS - Our middle school did have a cross-country program, and I was on the varsity in sixth and seventh grades. I did run in the middle school division at the Mt. SAC Invitational. I used to play soccer also, but now my sport is running.
How much mileage and how often did you train this past summer?

Race Winner Interview (Doug Speck):
Lenore Moreno (West Covina) - Girls Senior

Looked like you ran about 18:45, what are your thoughts on the time and the win?
LM - It was a pretty tough race, and I ran a lot better than the last meet so I am pleased that I ran my best time.
What was your plan or strategy for the race?
LM - I wanted to let others take the race out until we were around the track (ed- about half mile), then if I felt good to take the lead, and it worked out pretty good.
You say you ran here last year, do you remember your time?
LM - I ran in the high 19's last year.
What was your best time at a course like Mt. SAC last year?
LM - I ran 19:22 I believe last year and would like to improve into the low 18's this year.
What place did you take in League last year and what are some of your goals this year?
LM - I think I was third in league last year, the South Hills team is very strong, and I look for good competition from them once again as I try to win league.
What were your track time bests last year?
LM - I think I ran 5:32 in the 1600 and in the 11:40's for the 3200. I was second in League in the 3200 and ran in CIF there.
How much running did you do in the summer?
LM - I ran in the morning with our team, and tried to run some of the days also in the evening. I would run all seven days of the week. In the morning we would run between five and ten miles, and in the evening when I could I would try to add four or five.

Race Video by Rich Gonzalez
Race Winner Interview  by Doug Speck
What was your time today and what did you think of your race and the course?
NG - I think I ran like 19:40 and enjoyed the course. This is my best time by about a minute over three miles.
How did the race develop? Did you pick up the pace to move ahead of the others or did they just seem to fade?
NG - I defeinitely picked up the pace during the second loop through the park (ed - just before two miles) and left the couple who were running with me behind.
How many years have you been running at Alta Loma?
NG - This is my third year of competing.
How much running did you do this summer?
NG - I ran in the Junior Olympics this summer and ran about every day. After the JO’s I ran with the high school team and ran every day. Our longest day was like eleven or twelve miles.
Have you been on the Varsity your first years in High School?
NG - Yes, I have been running Varsity both years so far already. Our team has not done that good and we hope to improve this year and go to CIF.
What are your goals for the season?
NG - My goal was to make it under 20, which I did today, so I guess I need a new one. I would like to run under 19 minutes also.
