Warriors dominate in Hawaii
By BRENT SHAVER IRVINE WORLD NEWS
The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Race on the big island of Hawaii
served its purpose and then some for the Woodbridge High cross
country teams last week.
“It was about having fun first and running second,” Woodbridge Coach
George Varvas said. “It was a wonderful trip for all the athletes and coaches.
But it was important to get a race in before our Woodbridge invitational this
week. And it wasn’t an easy course in Hawaii. It probably ran about a minute
slower than Mt. SAC.”
The Warriors, who took their top 12 boys and 12 girls to Hawaii, left last
Tuesday and ran on Saturday. The Woodbridge girls team, ranked fourth in the
state in Division II, second in the CIF-Southern Section in Division II and
fourth in Orange County, completely dominated.
Woodbridge took the top six spots in the race and finished with 18 points.
The closest competitor had 93 points.
Senior Christine Babcock, the defending Division II state champion, won easily
in a time of 18:53.
“She is a running machine,” Varvas said.
“She didn’t work that hard, but didn’t run back with the competition
either. It was a good race for her and a nice victory.”
Sarah Toberty was second (21:20), Clarissa Lara took third (22.17), Madison
Murphy came in fourth (22:18), Jennie Krauser was fifth (22:22) and Brooke
ten Bosch placed sixth (22:34) for Woodbridge.
The Warrior boys also won, finishing with 38 points.
Woodbridge’s Shane Berglas placed second in 17:33 to lead the way.
Jordan Wozniak was seventh in 18:23, Danny Antrim took eighth in 18:30, Derrick
Fleming was ninth in 18:32, Michael Evans finished 12th in 18:58 and Bryan
ten Bosch was 13th in 19:04 for the Warriors.
“We put in some hard work over the summer and it was nice to see that the
kids were ready,” Varvas said.
“They really handled that course nicely. It should help us later in the
year.”
