BUFFALO BABES WIN AAU JUNIOR OLYMPICS IN VIRGINIA

Last weekend the Buffalo Babes traveled to Virginia Beach, Virginia for the AAU Junior Olympics. The winner of the Young Women’s race was Jordan Burke of Placer High School in a time of 18:46. She defeated runners from several states over the 5 kilometer course at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, just a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Burke was the SJS 3 section champion and was 7th at the state meet.
Burke’s Young Women’s team also won the national title by putting no fewer than eight girls in the top 14 in the race. Second for the Buffalo Babes was Natalie Sojka, a senior at Mt. Shasta high school, who was the next runner in behind Burke in a time of 18:55. Sojka has six state medals including three D5 team state titles and three top-three individual finishes in Division 5.
Jordan’s other teammates in the Young Women’s age group included Lauren Jimison in 4th place, 19:09 (senior, Capital Christian H.S.), Division 4 subsection champion and two-time D5 section champion; Samantha Dougherty in 6th place, 19:16 (junior, Union Mine H.S.), the Division 3 runner-up who was 11th at state; Samantha Racine in 9th place, 19:40 (senior, Del Oro H.S.), 6th at the SJS Division 3 section finals; and Katie Drueen in 10th place, 19:47 (senior, Modesto H.S.), a qualifier for the 2008 Boston Marathon. Alex Ciaraglia in 12th place, 20:01 (senior, Woodcreek H.S.) and Allie Jones in 14th place, 21:14 (senior, Union Mine H.S.) completed the team.
Three members of the Ponderosa H.S. team that just took 3rd place at the D2 state meet ran very well and led the Intermediate Girls to their second consecutive national title at this event. Kelly Roberts, Samantha Diaz, and Becky Preto, all juniors, made up that trio. Roberts and Diaz were in the Top 25 at the D2 state race, both under 19:00. Roberts was 4th at the Junior Olympics in 18:53 and #1 for the Buffalo Babes on Saturday while Diaz was 5th in 18:57 and Preto was 22ndin 20:13. The Buffalo Babes outran a team from Plainview, Oklahoma and won by a score of 27-49.
The other Buffalo Babes in the Intermediate Girl’s age group were Maddie Hall in 6th place, 19:05 (junior, Davis H.S.), tenth place at the Division 1 section finals; Shannon Harcus in 12th place, 19:29 (sophomore, Placer H.S.), 5th at SJS D3 Section finals; Natasha Brown in 18th place, 19:45 (junior, Del Campo H.S.) who made a nice comeback from late-season shin soreness; and Cynthia Laiacona in 30th place, 20:40 (junior, Mt. Shasta H.S.) who was eighth at the state meet in 2006 and is another member of the Mt. Shasta squad that has three straight state team titles.
The girls completed the trip to the east coast by visiting a old lighthouse at the mouth of the James River, touring Colonial Williamsburg and the Virginia Aquarium, actually swimming in the ocean, and the ‘mandatory’ out-of-town shopping mall trip. The weather was fairly decent for December and the Buffalo Babes had an absolute blast – one of the closest knit groups ever – and nearly refused to come home. Their joy and spirit made up for the lack of competition caused by several regular AAU attendees that splintered off to start yet-antother post-season race in Kentucky. The strong Brocaw Blazers were part of that rebel group leaving the Buffalo Babes with very few teams to run against.
The Buffalo Babes are supported by their fine high school coaches who are Randall Fee (Placer), Keith Maurer (Bret Harte), Chris Cole (Union Mine), Barbara Richardson (Ponderosa), Bill Gregg (Davis), Scott Sorgea (Capital Christian), Steve Nesheim (Mt. Shasta), Brian Heese (Modesto), Terri McKillop (Woodcreek), Kevin Ostenberg (Del Oro), and Sherri Brown (Del Campo). In Virginia, the Buffalo Babes were coached by former UC Davis runner Priscilla Moreno.
The men's side enjoyed more competition. Another California group, the Bay Area Track Club, took 3rd in the Young Men's race and was 5th out of 8 teams in the Intermediate Boys race. The number one runners for the Bay Area Track Club were Nathaniel Litwiller in the IB race (16:27) and Jacob Rin in the YM race (16:14). Anthony Palermini and Alex Davies were also under 16:30 in the YM race.
