Kirk Elias (Univ Nev Coach) talks
about his "field of dreams"

RENO -- When the lights came on, not only did the stars come out... but the starry-eyed did as well.
"This was really neat!" beamed South Lake Tahoe's Kelsey Smith, minutes after winning the high school girls race in Friday's inaugural Nevada Twilight Cross-Country Classic. "Being able to run at night is just sooooo much better and sooooo much more fun."
"It was a pretty cool experience," said Woodcreek's Garrett Seawell. "We don't get a chance to do this. More meets should be this way."
Although this was not Smith's first time running cross-country "under the lights", having the chance to enjoy the scheduling novelty in front of hometown friends and family made it extra special for the Nevada state title favorite. For the Northern Californian Seawell, the twilight cross-country racing experience was a first, with his race starting as the early-evening sun was still setting, but ending under nightfall in front of an estimated 1,000 onlookers at Rancho San Rafael Park. Runners racing for the finish line guided by a lineage of portable lightposts as screaming fans created an experience to behold indeed.
"We've been working for over 2 1/2 years to make this night event finally happen," said meet director and University of Nevada coach Kirk Elias. "The feedback has been all positive. All our support staff has been telling me the spectators and parents have had a great time, asking how many years we've been doing this. It has been a very satisfying success."
Not only was there high praise for a meet that afforded more than 300 finishers from 13 high schools and five collegiate programs an excellent means to kick off their seasons, but there also was plenty of thrilling action in a uniquely rewarding setting; the winning scoring margin in each high school race was three points or less and the winning margin of individual victory in each college race was merely one second.
The high school boys race became especially (and unintentionally) suspenseful when seeming runaway team winner Woodcreek of Roseville, CA., had one runner disqualified for cutting short a small portion of the course, leaving the team to rely upon its sixth finisher to complete its official five-man team score. That was Ryan Smith, who finished 66 seconds behind the team's eventual #4 scorer but still fast enough to secure a tight 49-51 team victory over Galena of northern Nevada.
"We had one guy (Raja Handa) that got DQ'ed, but everyone else ran well so we still did fine," said Woodcreek junior Garrett Seawell, the team's top placer and second overall (13:27 to 13:34) to Galena's Bryan Tibaduiza in the 4,000-meter, three-loop challenge. "We had a good team last year, but a few of us including myself didn't run our best at state. But we still finished 11th at state and that was the best we've ever finished. Our goal is to do at least better than that this year."
With their top four here (Seawell, Chris Romo in fourth overall, Cameron Mitchell in fifth, and Taylor Newman in seventh) and the DQed athlete, Woodcreek's usual scoring five would have gapped 37 seconds on the shortened course. The team is ranked fourth in the CIF-State Division II rankings, but with so many teams close together on the "seed chart" in the division, the group can ill-afford future disqualifications.
South Lake Tahoe's aforementioned Smith was the only athlete to employ a get-out-fast-and-press-the-pace approach in any of the twilight meet's four races, winning by 44 seconds over teammate Kate Lambdin on the relatively flat course contested at 4,500 feet altitude. Smith opened a sizeable gap by the second of three revolutions on the course, then left no others within sight of her starting into the third loop. Her finish time eventually proved to be eight seconds faster than even the college/open women's race winner, with that affair (see below) out to a very slow pace early on.
"I just wanted to get out quick then push on the hills," said the sophomore Smith, referring to the short incline about 1100, 2,400 and 3,700 meters into her race. "I didn't have much idea if anyone was close behind me. I was only wanting to look ahead."
South Tahoe's frontrunning tandem proved to be the difference as Reno's Demery Kirsch was third overall and Reno also held a head-on scoring advantage at the #3 and #5 scoring positions. But with Smith and Lambdin going 1-2 up front, South Lake Tahoe muscled out a 47-50 win, with Woodcreek taking third (64 points).
The UCLA men's program, a team deserving of at least a Top 12 national ranking when the preseason polls are released in the next week, dominated the collegiate/open men's race despite resting out several top runners. The Bruins of the Pac-10 Conference staked claim to 7 of the first 9 team scoring places for a commanding 17-51 win over Big West Conference member UC Riverside, another fine group comprised of a host of California prep graduates. Humboldt State topped Sacramento State, 85-98, for third.
Laef Barnes (a graduate of Washington state prep powerhouse Mead HS) and teammate Drew Shackleton (ex-Carlmont HS) stirred within a large lead pack for UCLA during the first two of five loops along the 6,000-meter race distance along with UC Riverside's Ulices Pina (Long Beach Poly) and open-level entrant Ronald Tibaduiza (Asics Aggies) .
Barnes and Shackleton then upped the tempo with two kilometers remaining as the field began to string out, with Pina slowing falling off pace and Tibaduiza also being challenged to keep up. Shackleton made a clear surge entering the final circuit of the roughly 1200-meter loop, with Barnes giving a fervent chase. Once the duo gapped the field, they then traded off the pacesetting duties, with Barnes looking the fresher of the two.
It was Barnes, a former indoor national high school champion in the mile, who then sped past his teammate along the final straightaway to win in 19:40 to Shackleton's 19:41. Tibaduiza overtook UCLA's Alex Crabill (Charles Wright Academy, WA) in the closing seconds to claim third, 19:54 to 19:55. UCLA sophomore Jake Matthews was 5th (20:03) ahead over Riverside's Pina (20:11) and Humboldt State's Jimmy Elam (20:12). UCLA's Evan Watchempino (Jesuit HS) was the top freshmen finisher, placer 8th overall in 20:15.
Among those sitting out for the powerful Bruins were veterans Austin Ramos (Jesuit), Kyle Shackleton (Carlmont) and Michael Haddan (Woodbridge), the first returning from a 2006 redshirt season and the other two being the team's top finishers at last year's Pac-10 Championships. Also not in the lineup was three-time California state champion (twice in track, once in XC) Michael Cybulski, part of Eric Peterson's sensational freshmen recruiting class. Cybulski and California state 800m track champion Cory Primm will reportedly redshirt, according to Peterson.
The collegiate/open women's race was an amazingly tactical -- a creative term for 'slow' -- affair during most of the first half of their 4,000-meter (2.5-mile) race, with the ENTIRE field of 50 runners separated by a mere seven seconds after first kilometer and the group at one point 45 seconds slower than the pace in the high school race. That's when UCLA's Olga Aulet-Leon sounded the wake-up call by gradually swooping the field into a quicker pace, with most of her Bruin teammates giving chase.
It was on the second of three loops that eventual team champion UC Riverside made its big move, marching past the Bruins as various scoring positions to assume an in-race, quick-score advantage over UCLA and the crew from the University of Nevada.
The up-front individual battle eventually whittled down to two-person tango between Riverside's Cristina Olivas (Bloomington HS) and Nevada's Amanda Escalon (Escalon HS), a prized former NorCal prep talent on the radar of many collegiate coaches and eventually signed by Nevada's Coach Elias. As they made the turn for home with some 70 meters remaining, Escalon held a slight edge over Olivas, but the UCR talent kicked into a final finishing gear to reel in Moreno stride before the finish and hold on for a 15:43-to-15:44 win.
All five UC Riverside scorers finished in the Top 10 as the Highlanders won the team challenge with a very impressive 21 points. Nevada, which improved its position against UCLA by 9 points in the last half-mile, placed second with 49 and UCLA was third with 53.

UCR's women had logged 90 miles during each of the previous two weeks and also rattled off a six-miler on race morning, arriving here very fit after placing 11th at the NCAA West Regionals last year; all seven from that squad raced here. Nevada, a rising program ranked seventh in the preseason NCAA Mountain Region poll, sat out its top returnee, Charlotte Schonbeck. The Bruins rested out three of their four returnees from the team that placed 5th at last year's West Regionals.
"If you'd have told me yesterday we would have beaten UCLA and still not have won the race. ... This was a beneficial and competitive way for these teams to start their seasons."
Now, if they could only get those NCAA Championships to be a twilight meet...

Prep Preview - Doug Speck - DyeStatCal
The High School portion of the meet will be a cooker, with some very fine California and Nevada squads in attendance.

Girls - South Lake Tahoe, one of the West's top programs in recent years, lost on the sixth runner rule in a super 4A team battle with Marie Lawrence's Reno group last Fall in their state title run, with the SLT group returning four from that team, led by Kelsey Smith, individual CC runner-up as a frosh, and 11:03 for 3200m in the State track meet for second again behind Lawrence.  Kate Lambdin and Kylie Noll return from the top fifteen of that State Championship run for South Lake Tahoe.  Demery Kirsch (Reno) was ninth for her team in the State 4A CC race last year and was third in the State Track Meet at 11:05 for 3200m.  Woodcreek returns all its girls from a Sac Joaquin Section sixth place Division II squad in Cross Country.  Kelly McEreney and Katie Holst lead a highly thought of Christian Brothers (Sacramento) squad.  Sara Howard is a California State Division II runner-up for Colfax.

Boys - Woodcreek (Rosevell) brings a super Boys' squad also, with six of the top seven back from the eleventh place Statewide Division II squad in 2006.  Woodcreek has Chris Romo, who was twelfth in State D2 last year in CC, with a 9:54 3200 from track, with Cameron Mitchell shining in the spring at 1:56.95 (800)-4:19.21 (1600) as did Garrett Seawell (4:29.05-9:35.35) and Taja Handa (4:28.54).  Galena (Nv) and its entry brings some dynamite to the top end, with Bryan Tibaduiza from the running family a 4:28-9:33 double in last year's State Track Meet over 1600 and 3200 meters, and Joe Abbott one of the nation's top 800m runners at 1:53.83.  Patrick Henry (San Diego) is a fine California squad, with Adam Rafiee (4:23.23c 1600).  Christian Brothers (Sacramento) brings in the Sac Joaquin's top Division IV squad, led by Jason Howard and Eric Little, top fifteen finishers in the Section meet last Fall.  The race up front should fly!  Brandon Ried (Reno) was 10th in State 4A last fall in Cross-Country in helping lead his team to a sweep of the Boys and Girls titles in Nevada, with George Cook-Cantu (Christian Brothers, Sacramento) Sac Joaquin Division IV runner-up last Fall, and Eric Gutierrez (Stagg, Stockton) 4:29 (1600) and 9:44 (3200) in the spring track season.  Manny Rin and Adrian Gallo are fine individuals from Deer Valley (Antioch) in California's NCS Section. Nathan Chellman (Sage Ridge, Nv) is an interesting watch, as the State 1A-2A CC Champ was also the State 1A 800 (1:59)-1600 (4:24)-3200 (9:57) champ at that level (and oh yeah he was fourth in the 400!).
