Ferris
is Fairest Of Them All
By Rich Gonzalez
Editor, DyeStatCal
PALO ALTO
-- It's very hard to catch a moving target... especially when it moves
as fast as Ferris High's boys' cross-country team these days.
Fresh off a win over Washington
in-state rival and preseason U.S. #1 Mead, the "Red Wave"
from the Northwest blitzed new U.S. #1 Royal High of California in the
featured Seeded Boys Race at the 33rd Annual Stanford Invitational on
Saturday afternoon.
"I told the guys, ' We've
got a little bit of a bull's eye on our back (after beating Mead)...
Well, we're going to make it bigger today,' " Ferris coach Mike
Hedway. "They followed through on it."
Ferris' winning attack featured
a trio of fruntrunners that were among the first dozen scorers and two
others that closed out a swift-moving 42-second scoring gap that proved
too much for its rivals to counter. Royal, largely aided by an outstanding
1-2 punch, did not have its depth scorers answer the call in an 84-98
defeat to Ferris in a blockbuster race showcasing 13 NTN-ranked teams
from four different regions.
All signs on the prep boys' cross-country
scene indicated a major power surge shifting toward the "Left Coast"
this year, with prolific lineups from Washington-based foes Mead and
Ferris high schools being challenged by perhaps the strongest collection
of teams in California history. Saturday marked the first titanic clash
between those forces, with the outcome being nothing short of a spectacular
barnburner. The top three finishers had been ranked atop their NTN Region
at one point or another this fall, with two also ranked #1 nationally
and the third now destined to be so as well.
On the girls' side, it was highly
favored and second-ranked nationally Corona del Mar of Southern California
thoroughly dominating its competition with a resounding 80-150 over
U.S. #7 Torrey Pines of San Diego in the girls featured race. Eight
NTN-ranked squads were in the field.
Although Northwest teams
looked strong on the boys side, NW #1 girls squad Jesuit was jolted
just a tad via its 5th-place finish, including setbacks against the
California Region's #1, #2, #5 and #8 teams while the remaining 4 of
the top 8 teams in the region skipped the meet.
Conditions were ideal for
fast times, with temperatures in the high 60s for much of the day under
beneath overcast skies. The course was altered on the back loop from
previous years, eliminating one of the climbs... and the ensuing downhill.
"I like the downhills,
so I missed that this year," said Reno High's (NV) Marie Lawrence,
who won the Seeded Girls 5k race in 17:06, the best girls' time of the
day.
In a day marked by breakthroughs
from relative unknowns on the national scene, the biggest surprise came
from Davis High's Brendan Gregg, who bulldogged pre-race favorite Michael
Cybuslki of Royal for most of the first two miles before bolting into
the lead.
Cybulski, unable to maintain
his breakneck mid-race pace, eventually wearied over the last 650 meters
as Gregg and Washington's Max O'Donoghue McDonnell (Seatlle Prep) breezed
past. Gregg won in 14:47, with O'Donoghue McDonell a second back and
Cybulski settling for third in 15:03. Most were surpised at the outcome...
but not Gregg.
"I knew pretty much without
a doubt that I could win the race," said the Northern California
senior. "The whole week I just telling myself that. I just had
to hang on to that first pack."
While there were definitely individual
strategies in play in the boys race, much of the focus centered on the
team battle, as four of the top six teams in the nation (as per The
Harrier Magazine) were meeting up.
Here's a quick scan of the
potential fallout from this past weekend's Stanford extravaganza as
it pertains to the NTN qualifying scene:
-
Ferris, WA
-- With head-on victories over previous U.S. #1's Mead and Royal already,
only an implosion figures to keep their crew off the start line in
Portland during that first Saturday in December.
-
Royal, CA
-- As good as the Highlanders are -- and they are outstanding -- a
challenge must be issued to the team's depth runners, who include
three juniors with virtually no big-met experience, if they are to
fulfill their goal of being crowned champion at NTN. Cybulski, who
had a late start to his summer training, is rounding into shape and
teammate Hudson Andrews enjoyed the best race of his career at Stanford.
-
Mead, WA
-- Perhaps the most awe-inspiring showing came from the boys from
Mead, considering that top runner Taylor Nepon was still sidelined
and two other varsity runners (including an occasional scorer) were
also out of the lineup. At full strength, Mead matches up fairly evenly
with Ferris. Nepon, spotted on the start line before the race, said
he was ready to run but a coaching decision was made to have him return
to action next week.
-
El Toro, CA --
We warned you all. For anyone who read our Woodbridge Invitational
recap, the Chargers' eventual improvement was foretold. At Woodbridge,
key scorer Adbow Haji finished a distant last in the team order. Had
he run his usual race, they'd have likely finished second at Woodbridge
and kept Royal on its toes. The Charger pack still needs to move up
a few more seconds in the major races, but the talent and the chemistry
is in place.
-
Jesuit, CA
-- Anyone writing the Marauders off already? If so, you probably aren't
keen on Jesuit history. They peak very well at the end. Jesuit has
had a knack for peaking better than the other Calfiornia teams every
year at season's end. However, the challenge is tougher this year
because the intangibles for a couple of the other teams in the mix
this year are stromger than in th past. It will be very interesting.
-
La Salle, OH
-- On one hand, you want to give the boys from Cincinnati credit for
traveling to the West Coast to participate in the nation's strongest
meet against America's top teams. However, results are what matter
most and the crew that was projected to finish seventh here finished
one spot better -- needing one team to capsize and also needing a
6th-runner tiebreaker to defeat another. Credit the crew for having
nice enough depth to gain the upper hand on an NTN-ranked team for
the second time this season via a 6th-runner tiebreaker. That's the
good news. The flip side is that La Salle must likely gain an automatic
berth from the Midwest Region, or let its at-large hopes come under
scrutiny while suffering head-to-head losses here against other likely
at-large candidates.
-
Davis, CA --
Steadily improving, the Sac-Joaquin Section force did very well to
tie Midwest Region #5 La Salle of Ohio before losing in a 6th-runner
situation. Two frontrunners and a nice support crew make this unit
a great darkhorse for a podium spot at the state meet.
-
Arcadia, CA --
With its frontunner seemingly a bit off pace here, the entire Apaches
crew followed suit in losing by 60 points to an El Toro team is defeated
at Woodbridge two weeks prior.
-
Upland, CA
-- A key scorer was way off for the Highlanders here, costing them
a second consecutive sub-par performance at a major meet. Will undoubtedly
stumble in the next rankings after defeating Arcadia in Week #1, but
losing to the Apaches in Weeks #2 and #4.
-
Madera, CA
-- With frontrunner Rocky Richardson relegated to cheerleading status
as his injury heals and its #7 man also missing the race, Madera actually
held together quite well in the pressure cooker. Very nice showing
of poise by the young group.
-
Jesuit, OR
-- The Crusaders boast a fine pack yet again. However, if they are
to challenge and the region's leading elite, a consistent frontrunner
will need to emerge.
-
Seattle Prep, WA
-- A potentially outstanding 1-2 punch lays th groundwork for nice
team showings, but the scoring gap (close to 2 minutes for 1-to-5
and more than 90 seconds for 1-to-3) leaves the group vulnerable in
strong fields.
-
Los Gatos, CA
-- It's very difficult to ask teams to repeatedly answer the bell
several times out in a short span. For Los Gatos, which has been racing
hard thus far this fall, a hiccup was to eventually be expected.
-
Don Bosco Prep, NJ --
This was identified in mid-summer as a definite rebuilding years for
all of the hierarchy teams in the state of New Jersey, although traditional
powers such as Christian Brothers Academy and Don Bosco are threats
to reload nicely by year's end. It figured to get ugly here against
a top-notch field -- and it was. Don Bosco finished 21st out of 23
teams but did fare well in lower-level action. You can bet this group
will be back and shining on the radar before too long.
