Even while on the move, Great American remains
powerful magnet attracting elite distance programs
Slew of state champions scheduled to converge on new course in Alabama

There's only one truth more apparent than the fact that the popular Great American Cross-County Festival hardly seems to stay put. The truth is this: Wherever the meet goes, the talent follows.
In securing its fifth meet venue in its celebrated eight-year history, meet organizers on Friday released the entry fields for the 2006 GACCF, which will be contested on Saturday, September 23rd at Spain Park in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. No less than 118 boys schools and 96 girls schools are confirmed for the competition, which also features 24 women's teams and 22 men's teams in the collegiate portion of the event.
More than numbers, the 8th edition of Great American boasts very impressive quality. The top boys team in the NTN Southeast Region, Midlothian High of Virginia, leads a grand total of 16 decorated programs (8 boys and 8 girls) that grace the NTN preseason regional charts. But the of flow of running talent doesn't cease there. All told, a whopping 40 defending state team champions (21 boys/19 girls) will be showcased!
The featured Girls Nike Race of Champions clash boasts a definite Southeast feel as 6 of the top 7 programs in that region's preseason NTN listing will converge in hopes of earning the region's top spot once the dust settles on what is said to be a challenging 5,000-meter layout. Tatnall of Delaware (#2), Midlothian of Virginia (#3) and Episcopal of Florida (#4) top the entries, with all three programs very much considered on the same performance tier heading into the season, with the Great American Cross-Country Festival providing an ideal opportunity to sort out the true pecking order.
Brentsville of Virginia (#5), Collins Hill of Georgia (#6) and Alabama schools Mountain Brook (#7) and Scottsboro (#10) are other top-ranked girls squads representing the Southeast, which is heavily represented in each of the day's 14 high school races. Tupelo, which scored a perfect 15 points (!) in winning last year's Section 5A state title in Mississippi, is the remaining NTN-ranked girls squad in attendance, being tabbed as the #4 team in the South Region coming in. Individually, Virginian Catherine White (Northside HS) has the most gleaming credentials coming in, placing 11th at last year's FootLocker Cross-Country Championships competition in San Diego, CA.

Could the venue relocation to Alabama be a sweet advantage for local teams like Mountain Brook?
North Carolina's elite teams/runners seemed to enjoy clear success when the meet was held in that state.
Although this year's locale is the fifth in the eight-year history of the meet, it is the first venue change
since the National Scholastic Sports Foundation assumed ownership of the event three years ago.

The competition on the boys' side in the Nike Race of Champions should be very thrilling as a trio of powerful Northeast Region-ranked contingents will lock up against four Southeast Region-ranked lineups and another NTN-ranked crew from the South Region in a test of regional strength.
The Northeast Region is clearly reloading after a banner campaign last year, but it sends arguably its two best representatives here as New York schools Collegiate and Shenendehowa are making the trip to Alabama. Collegiate (#2) and Shenendehowa (#4) will seek to bolster their credentials with a big win here, with the former showcasing very nice balance behind a pair of solid frontunners and the latter boasting excellent tradition, fine talent and a mega-talented transfer (Stephen Murdock, the aggressive frontrunner formerly of Saratoga Springs). Each of the top six teams in the Northeast region preseason poll has major questions to address in determining its hierarchy, but a few of those answered should be provided here. Warwick Valley (#10), also of New York, is a quickly reloading group expected to close in on the region's upper echelon as the season plays out.
Midlothian's boys appear to be the class of the Southeast Region at the start of the season (although we are getting word that Thomas Jefferson High of Virginia may be welcoming back its star runner from injury soooner than expected), with a very deep crew on tap for the perennially powerful "Midlo" program. Smiths Station of Alabama (#4 in the Southeast Region) will be the popular local favorite here, with Brentsville of Virginia (#6, SE) and Walton of Georgia (#9, SE) aiming to bring more respectability to a region which showed clear signs of progress at the top end last year. Tupelo of Mississippi (#7 in the South Region) rounds out the NTN-ranked squads here, attempting a very strong showing here which could help forge its way through the collection of fine Texas teams in its regional listing.
Many strong runners are featured in the Race opf Champions, but the most interesting matchup could be a pair of FootLocker finalists -- Ben Hubers from Georgia (McEachern HS) and Brian Rhodes-Devey from New York (Guilderland HS). Hubers (18th at FootLocker) rose to the challenge to place third at Nike Outdoor Nationals in the mile (4:07.76) while Rhodes-Devey (25th at XC nationals) enjoyed a superb indoor track campaign.
