JUNIORS WOMEN RACE RECAP BELOW         JUNIOR MEN RACE RECAP
By Richard Gonzalez, DyeStat

NEW YORK --
Before getting her chance to prove she's ready for the hot competition and the toasty termperatures found on the West Coast, Nicole Blood demonstrated in her final prep outing as a New Yorker that she can still leave the competition in a deep freeze while competing on the East Coast.
Blood, the high-profile New York talent destined for California in the days to come, cajoled a final surge along the last 800 meters to reel in unheralded McKayla Plank of Iona College in winning the Women's Juniors division at Saturday's USATF Cross-Country Championships in Van Cortlandt Park. Blood toured the 6-kilometer course (comprised of three 2-kilometer circuits of relatively flat terrain broken up by mild climbs and descents) in 20 minutes, 45 seconds, admitting the effort was tougher than she expected as she dropped to as low as fifth, but indicated that a late-race directive refocused her in time to key the win.
Plank, who lost ample precious time while re-affixing one of her racing spikes during a footing mishap on the middle loop (see more below), enjoyed a breakthrough effort to place a stunning second in 20:46 as the top six racers all  finished within a mere three seconds of each other.
Blood's effort, her biggest triumph to date in a highly decorated and well-chronicled career, capped a sensational day for high school harriers in the event. She was joined by fellow preps Kauren Tarver (Serrano HS, CA) and Marie Lawrence (Reno HS, NV) in claiming three of the top four finish spots in the race, with the top six placers earning berths to the IAAF World Cross-Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, on April 1-2. Rounding out the squad were Plank and collegians Erin Bedell (Baylor) and Madeline McKeever (Duke).
Teamwise, the Northern California-based Buffalo Babes Club edged Texas-based Dallas Metroplex, 18-19 (using four scorers for the race), in the women's Juniors team standings to earn the national title in thrilling fashion, adding even more Golden State highlights to the ledger.
The men's Juniors race will be contested on Sunday.

"Probably the last 800 meters, (Blood's personal coach, Bob Lane) yelled that there was only six of us (in the lead pack) and no one was near, so all of a sudden I felt reeeeally good," laughed Blood, who shared the lead with Bedell for much of the first two loops (splitting 6:56 for the first loop 7:09 for the second) before Bedell and then Plank each made moves to take turns in assuming the lead position. "Then the last straightaway, I kicked hard."
Blood later admitted to struggling at the threshold of her comfort zone as the race dragged out, with matters further complicating themselves for the entire field when a sudden snow flurry whisked across the lanscape at 10:45 into the race. "That was no fun, but I'm used to it," quipped Blood. "I wasn't feeling too good but I was still in good position and felt good enough to do what I needed to."
The victory continued a frenetic month for the Gansevoort, NY resident and Saratoga Springs HS student, who sought to catch a flight to Southern California from John F. Kennedy airport later this afternoon, but instead reportedly missed her flight when she enjoyed one final farewell luncheon with friends. Blood, a four-time FootLocker nationals qualifier, had been rumored to be heading to the Golden State for the last three months, with that information being confirmed in recent weeks when her stepdad received a job promotion on the West Coast.
Blood indicated she indeed hopes to run for Ventura County-based Royal HS, but said she will continue to receive workouts from Lane via email, citing a need for training continuity before she attends the University of Oregon in the Fall. In addition to any possible racing at Royal, Blood will compete at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Maryland in mid-March (likely in the two-mile), perhaps in a USATF tune-up meet for Worlds, and then the world meet on the opening weekend in April.
Plank, the ex-California prep who landed on the East Coast for her college years, caught onlookers completely off guard when she moved into qualifying contention on the final loop, prompting many to wonder who the "mystery runner" was.
"Last year, I wasn't even on the map in high school," said Plank, enjoying her newfound fame. "I was always the underdog; no one knew who I was. It's nice to finally break out here."
Plank, whose senior-year personal bests (2:13.94/4:58.84/11:06.32) at Archbishop Mitty High in San Jose did not rank among the top 20 in the state in any standard event, credited hard work, dedication, a fine collegiate program at Iona and a blessing from God as the keys to her improvement.
She unavoidably "muddied" her chances at victory, however, when she encountered footing problems while in the lead pack down the stretch as one of her shoes came undone during the middle loop of the race. Plank, who says she has really big feet and often wears boys' shoes that create a problem as her narrow feet create a loose fit, had problems finding a racing spike that fit her feet for the race. She said she eventually settled on a pair that she estimated at being one full size too big.
"For a while, I kept trying to stomp to get it back on (when it came loose, but to no avail), and so going up the back hills I figured now is the time to try and put it back on," explained Plank. "I stopped in the middle of the ground for like 30-40 seconds, trying to yank it on. ... I think I used up a lot of energy trying to catch up again."
Plank twice estimated the lost time to be about 30-40 seconds, but it was a hard to fathom the approximation given the quality of the competitors in the field and the size of deficit one could suffer in such time.
Perhaps the best-kept distance-running secret in America gained a little more exposure in The Big Apple, as Tarver (who has already left a phalanx of Golden State experts aghast with her super leg speed in track) "arrived" on the national/international scene with a big third-place showing here, good enough to earn a nationla team uniform. Not bad for a girl who 12 months ago considered soccer and tennis to be her two best sports.
Tarver, who lives at altitude in Wrightwood and thus admitted she felt at home with the elements of snow and mud found here, dazzled during her two junior high school showings on the shortened Mt. SAC course. Success continued in her freshman year in high school, juggling tennis and running to eventually earn a stunning berth at FootLocker nationals in the latter. She returned to FootLocker this year, but her recent decision to enter the Junior Nationals meet was spawned by discussion from other runners at FootLocker about this meet. Her curiosity piqued, Tarver eventually signed up on then called upon her middle coach (Dick Hoefle) to coach her since CIF-Southern Section rules prohibited out-of-season coaching be her high school coach.
"I was a bit nervous today, but it eventually went away and I was able to relax," said Tarver. "I didn't really like having to run in circles three times, but I got used to it. I wasn't sure what to expect , but I surprised myself today. I was hoping to finish in the top twelve."
Lawrence, the three-time FootLocker nationals silver medalist with the enormous peer following, showed her mettle in the frigid temperatures to battle her way onto Team USA despite reportedly battling a hip injury in recent weeks. The ailment had forced Lawrence to withdraw from the Junior International Mile at the Boston Indoor Games in January, but she showed little sign of problem at Van Cortlandt, with her condition possibly aided by the relatively flat terrain (one fairly steep but short climb). Should Lawrence have any lingering hip problem, she'll benefit at the world meet from the fact the Fukuoka course is said to be as flat as a pancake.
Bedell, the former Texas prep star while at Plano East HS, led for much of the first half of the race, although Blood seemingly was content to pace off her shoulder. McKeever, part of this year's sensational freshmen recruiting class at Duke, was in contention throughout in earning her first berth in international competition. Minnesota age-group sensation Bria Wetsch was the only other prep to finish in the top 10, placing 8th in 20:59.
The Buffalo Babes, part of the Buffalo Chips running club, squeaked out victory as Riverbank High's Maritza Garcia, Arcata High's Yasmine White, Acalanes High's Mo Huber and Burlingame High's Katie Voigtlander placed 3-4-5-6 in the team scoring, finishing within 25 seconds of each other after shoring up the placing gap that existed at the close of the first loop. Fairfield High's Caprice Bradshaw and Vacaville High's Cecily Lemmon rounded out the team's championship effort!

USATF Press Release Saturday Recap
Goucher, Russell and Blood take titles at USA
Cross Country Championships presented by Gleukos

NEW YORK - Nicole Blood of Gansevoort, N.Y., Adam Goucher of Portland, Ore. and Blake Russell of Marina, Calif., captured U.S. titles at the 2006 USA Cross Country Championships presented by Gleukos held at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday.
In addition to crowning national champions, the championships served as the selection event for the U.S. team that will compete at the 2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. The top six finishers in the Open and Junior races are eligible to compete for the U.S. team on April 1-2 in Fukuoka, Japan. The USA Championships follows the same format as the upcoming World Championships, with six races over a two-day span.
The Junior women's 6 km began under cold, windy conditions to lead off an exciting day of cross country racing at the legendary course in the Bronx. Blood and last year's runner-up Erin Bedell of Plano Texas took charge during the first circuit of the three loop course with Mckayla Plank (Los Gatos, Calif.), Madeline McKeever (Durham N.C.), Kauren Tarver (Wrightwood, Calif.), and Marie Lawrence (Reno, Nevada) on their heels.
As the race progressed into the final lap, Plank and Tarver positioned themselves to take the win over Blood but as the trio headed into the home-stretch, Blood had one more gear that took her to her first USA Cross Country title in 20:45 with Plank and Tarver finishing second and third running 20:46 and 20:47, respectively. Lawrence, Bedell and McKeever rounded out the top-six while qualifying for the U.S. Cross Country squad for Fukuoka.
"It was tough today. I had a really good feeling with about 800 meters to go; then I kicked it in," said Blood, who will attend the University of Oregon in the fall. "It's going to be a good experience going to Japan. It's kind of sad that this is my last race in New York. I love this course."
The senior men's 4 km featured a strong field with any one of ten men that might emerge as champion. After the first 2 km circuit, only four were in contention for the win with Goucher, Ryan Hall (Woodside, Calif.), Daniel Lincoln (Little Rock, Ark.), and Jorge Torres (Boulder, Colo.), in front of the field by ten meters.
As the field entered the final straight away it was Goucher pressing to the front for the title running 10:50 to finish two seconds ahead of Daniel Lincoln. Ryan Hall, Jorge Torres, Ian Dobson and Luke Watson rounded out the top-six to qualify for the Team USA cross country team.
"I wanted to get in good position early, as the course narrowed quickly. I knew that within the first half mile, the contenders would show their faces," said Goucher, the 2000 USA champion at 4 km. "I knew that this would be a close race with Jorge (Torres), and Ryan Hall, and Daniel Lincoln in there. Overall I think that this is going to be the strongest U.S. 4 km team going to worlds."
In the final race of the day, two-time defending champion Colleen De Reuck of Boulder, Colo., Russell and Katie McGregor (Saint Louis Park, Minn.), took charge early, opening a gap on the field by the end of the first loop. Shortly after the start of the second circuit, Russell began to push to the front and by the beginning of the third lap McGregor had fallen 10 meters off the pace.
As Russell and De Reuck battled for the win on the final loop, Sara Slattery (Portland, Ore.), and Rene Metivier (Boulder, Colo.), began to gain ground on McGregor. As De Reuck and Russell emerged from the woods, Russell made her final push to open up a five meter lead and take her first USA Cross Country title running 26:47 to finish two seconds up on De Reuck who made her fourth Team USA Cross Country squad. Metivier, Slattery, McGregor and Sharon Thompson rounded out the top-six to qualify for the U.S. team.
"I wanted to go out hard and get a good start. The course was good. When I ran it yesterday, I didn't think that hill was all that bad; however, the hill was a little harder than I thought. Colleen really pushed the pace on the third lap. She'd take off on the uphill, and I'd come back on her on the downhill. I think I'm going to run the 4km tomorrow, unless I feel really beat up."
The USA Cross Country Championships presented by Gleukos will be televised February 20 (late evening February 19) at 12:00 a.m. EST on ESPN 2.
