Starting Line Explanation

Two Starting Lines in Seeded Races

Any runner who feels he or she belongs in the seeded race may enter that race; however, we certainly want to ensure that those athletes who realistically have a chance to finish in the top eight places and qualify for the National Championship have a fair, competitive chance.

The best way to accommodate everyone is by using two starting lines for the seeded races.

The first start line will be reserved for the top ten returning athletes from last year’s regional along with the top runners from the Western United States. The line, itself, will be 160’ wide: the top 30-35 seeded athletes will be allowed to line up in the middle 80’ of that front line (These athletes will have bib numbers ranging from 1-39.) The next 30-50 athletes will be allowed to line up on the two 40’ sides of the front starting line (these athletes will have bib numbers ranging from 41-99).

There will be a second 160’ starting line approximately 10 yards behind the first line where the remaining athletes will start (These athletes will have bib numbers higher than 100.) Any athletes with bib numbers higher than 100 who try to move up from the second starting line prior to the firing of the starting gun will immediately be disqualified.

How The Seeds Are Determined

Bibs 1-10-Front Start Line-Middle
The top ten returning runners from last year’s Western Regional automatically receive the top ten bib numbers for this year.

Bibs 11-39-Front Start Line-Middle
Approximately the 20 best runners not already in the top ten returning runners will be selected. This is determined by a variety of factors. Our seeding committee first looks at state meet results—these state meet results weigh quite heavily. Other considerations are performances in major invitationals, end-of-the season races, and other previous outstanding track or cross country accomplishments.

Bibs 41-99-Front Start Line-Sides (Athlete can choose either side)
Approximately the next 50 best runners will be selected using the criteria stated above. All state champions not included in the top 39 bibs will be included in this section.

Bibs 100-Up - Second Start Line (Athlete can choose any spot on second start line)
All other runners entered in seeded race will start from this line.

Athlete Introductions

All state champions and the top ten returning athletes will be introduced prior to the start of the race.

Those athletes should check in to the starting line area 15 minutes prior to the start of the seeded race and assemble at the introduction spot about 150 meters from the start line. Introductions will be done from highest number down to the number one returning runner.

You will be allowed to continue to warm up right up until the time you are introduced, and the race will not begin until all the introduced runners have had plenty of time to get on the starting line in a comfortable starting position.
