Miller Summer Fun Run

Over the grassy meadow of Joaquin Miller Park, a field of fifty runners
in the mile and seventy runners in the two-mile stepped to the starting
line ready to race, but most importantly have fun. The friendly atmosphere
was a great way to end our final 2006 summer run.
First off in the boys mile, Willie Godfrey took over the lead from Jose Bedolla
during the second lap and hung on for the win in 5:49.60. Oakland Tech HS Coach
Noah Hinkston was third in 5:56.23. Sixty-two year old Steve Stephens set a
new age group record in both the one and two mile events. On the girls side,
talented runner Rosa Magana finished in first place with a time of 6:48.51.
Right behind was twelve-year-old Kai Wilson who finished in 6:55.90 breaking
a new age group record!
After adding the hill loop to the one mile course, you have a pretty tough
two mile run with Mark Ceraldi leading the way who finished with a fine time
of 11:21.99, eleven seconds ahead from Oakland High’s top runner John
Cheng. Helping pace runners was 2004 US Olympic Trial competitor Steve Moreno
who finished 3rd in 11:33.90. Switching over to the girls side, two new age
group records were broken by first place finisher Diane Dove, 48, in 14:35.26
and second place finisher Kaitlyn Spees ,13, in 14:41.02.
It’s always a pleasure for David Ponas with the help of others to put
on a race for everyone to enjoy, so we hope to see you next summer in August.
