         The first of two 2006 Joaquin Miller Summer Runs was a great success. There were over 150 runners total who showed up to race in the nice cool evening weather in Oakland, CA. Competition was running well in both the one and two mile events.
        Alameda High School 2006 graduate Miguel Castro ran a superb mile on the men’s side taking first place with a new record of 5:24.23. Apparently a mile was not enough for Castro as he raced in the tougher two mile and came back for another win in 11:22.94 edging Granada High’s Bryan Chow’s 11:25.53. Identical twins John and Paul Cheng from Oakland High School also took on both events taking 3rd and 4th in the mile and 7th and 8th in the two mile respectively. Oakland Tech’s Cross Country Coach Noah Hinkston was one of the very few older men giving our younger runners competition. He finished with a fine 5:59.30 taking 8th place in the mile.
        On the women’s side, former Oakland Athletic League competitors Maya Valez who attended Skyline High and Jennifer Doyle who attended Oakland Technical High battled it out in the mile, but Valez hung on for the win beating Doyle by two seconds. Twenty-three year old Lawa Melendez ran away with the win in the women’s two-mile by finishing over one minute from second place finisher Chelsea Schneider, only fourteen years of age. Amy Cordisco finished in 3rd after a strong finish to pass many runners in the last 400 meters of the race.
       It was an amazing day and I hope to see everyone again next week for our final summer run. Thanks for coming and enjoy the rest of your summer!
