Blue Lagoon Classic

Under almost ideal conditions the 2005 version of the Blue Lagoon Invitational went off without
a hitch. It was business as usual for the fine Cabrillo boys' team while junior Becky Brinkenhoff
of Ventura High appeared to have her breakout race.

For the second year in a row, Michael Coe led the Conquistadors around the course. Last year,
Michael broke thorough at the Lagoon to score his first victory of the season. This year, Michael
repeated as champion as he helped the Cabrillo group secure the first three places in the race.
Finishing a mere 4 seconds off his 15:05 victory of last year, Mr. Coe was one of three Cabrillo
runners to break 16 minutes on the course and one of six Conquistadors to finish in the top 11
of the race. Finishing second was consistent Colin Hacker in 15:31. Sophomore Miguel Ortiz
was barely able to nip Dos Pueblos' William Yochum as they both cross the finish line in 15:47
Also crossing the finish line in a sub 16 minute time was Nathan Longcrier of Centennial of Bakersfield.

On the girls' side, junior Becky Brinkenhoff of Ventura won her first ever varsity cross country
race in 19:06. She was one of five Cougars to finish in the top 10 of the race. Breaking away
from the field by the mile mark, Becky was able to maintain a 10 to 20 second lead over Lizzy
Baker-Steimer of Centennial for the entire race. Baker was second in 19:18. The always fast
closing Lauren Martinez of Ventura moved from sixth to third in the last 400 meters to take
home third, just in front of two more Centennial runners, Jennifer Dittman (19:34) and Monica
Morley (19:38).
