2005 Three Course Challenge
Seaside, Oregon - 9/24/05

A Little Bit of Everything up in Oregon!!
Cerritos HS Album of Meet

Cerritos, Sultana (Hesperia) and Stagg (Stockton) from California ventured north into Oregon for the "Three Course" challenge on September 24th, at Camp Rilea, in Seaside, Oregon.  This appears to be a Cross-Country meet unlike most others, with three different courses run during the day (check the pictures on some of the area included!!)

Cerritos Report from Coach Jason Wutanabe

As our annual qualifying meet, the Three Course Challenge was an event that many of our athletes were looking forward to. Originally the athletes were to qualify based on academic achievement (including improvement), citizenship, dedication, fundraising, and of course, performance. Thirty-four athletes and five coaches made the trek in our charter bus from Cerritos to Redding to Seaside, OR and back - a total of about forty bus hours!

Upon arrival, athletes were required to randomly draw courses - obviously, most athletes wanted to select the courses with the mud pit - however, all were surprised and enthusiastic with their experience. We stayed in the barracks of the Camp Rilea National Guard facility where they held a movie night and dance following the dinner at Seaside High School.

The race itself was a true cross-country experience! A band played music similar to the music you would hear prior to an army going to war! As the gun went off, the athletes were tested on a variety of surfaces - grass - both short and tall, dirt and rocky trails, elk trails, soft sand hills, mossy hills, and of course mud and water! They also were tested with steep uphills and downhills, logs that served as obstacles throughout the course, among other things! My athletes all responded with "this is real cross-country" as they walked away covered in mud.

I had three athletes finish in the top fifty in their races - Victoria Cerda (18), Kimberly Cooper (30), and Tina Wang (44). The races were large, however, the wide-open start allowed for the race to stretch out a bit! Again, it was the best experience my athletes could have ever had. We will definitely be back in two years if we get approval and I have athletes who qualify!

Girls: Sultana - 2nd behind Snohomish, Cerritos - 8th, AA Stagg - 13th
Boys: Sultana - 3rd, Cerritos - 13th

Each team has two compete on easy, two on moderate, and three on difficult. Each team was required to select at random, the courses on which each runner would compete. There were a total of 2,200 runners and 93 teams - supposedly the largest meet in the Northwest region.

Easy course is long straightaways across grass fields, dirt, soft sand, small rock paths, and moss. Various logs and rolling moss hills made this course interesting.

Moderate course had it's main feature as the mud pit, however, had it's share of difficult hills winding through dirt, grass, water, and soft sand.

The difficult course also shared the main feature as the mud pit, however included some intense uphills and downhills, a long stretch of soft sand and tall grass fields.
