WJU Men Take Second

September 17, 2005, Rocklin, CA - Joe Kaufman and Sara Kelly placed 5th and
2nd in their respective races at William Jessup University's Second Annual
Cross Country Invitational Saturday held on their new course. Kaufman
clocked 27 minutes 56 seconds, to break teammate Tim Steele's 2004 record of
30:57 on the challenging 5-mile course, and Kelly broke her previous mark of
21:35 on the 5k (3.1-mile) course with the new school standard of 20:20.

Miguel Nuci, running unattached, was the overall winner in the Men's 5-mile
Race with a time of 26:39, while Desiree Castellanos of UC-Stanislaus took
the women's 5k race in 19:39. Both marks are new WJU Course Records.

In the Men's team competition, CS-Stanislaus placed first with 31 points,
ahead of the WJU Warriors who placed second with 55 points. Holy Names
University was third (66 points), and Monterey Bay was fourth (75).
Stanislaus also won the Women's race with 19 points, followed by Sonoma
State (46), Monterey Bay (70), and Mills College (99).

Backing up Kaufman for the Warrior men was Tim Steele who placed 8th in
28:42, Tom Harrer, placing 16th in 30:05; followed by Parker Daniells, Sean
Campbell, and Jacob Rydman, finishing in places 18-20.

In the Women's Race, Kelly battled Castellonos of Stanislaus throughout the
first half of the race and then lost contact on "Tribulation Hill" with just
over a mile remaining. Although WJU did not field a full women's team,
Amanda Gillming, running unattached this week, placed 7th in 21:11, followed
by Tracy Allgeier, Natalie Marquez, and Amy Mendez in places 29th, 30th, and
40th.

"We invited several more competitive teams to our meet this year and our
runners responded well by continuing to set benchmarks for future WJU XC
teams," said WJU Coach Nick Vogt, "Although we did not take the team title
this year, every returning member of our team set individual course records.
Tim (Steele) improved 2 minutes, 16 seconds. Tom (Harrer) improved 1:36;
Jake (Rydman) improved 2:30, Sara (Kelly) improved 1:15, and Tracy
(Allgeier) improved immensely by multiple minutes."

The Warrior's next competition will be the Stanford Invitational in Palo
Alto on September 24, with the Women's race beginning at 5:15 pm, followed
by the Men's race at 5:45.
