Conditions: breezy, high 60’s (rained 90 minutes before races)

Course: 3 miles, approximately ¾ packed dirt, ¼ grass, 3 quick ascents up to canal bank; a triple loop course around the AHS “Happy Trail” concluding on track at Falcon Field

Dave Donaldson Memorial Varsity Girls Championship:

Sable Browning of Merced High School, a Sac-Joaquin Masters Meet 800 meter qualifier last year as a freshman, dominated the race. She ran even splits (6:15, 6:17, 6:10) to better the old course record by 4 seconds, easily besting the rest of the field with a time of 18:42. Browning, a sophomore, looks to figure prominently in the SJS Division 1 individual state meet qualifying.

On the team side, Buhach Colony High School (Atwater) was clearly the class of the field. With 6 girls finishing in the top 10 overall, the Thunder scored a county record 22 points, led by individual runner-up Natalie Benoy.

Greg McKinstry Varsity Boys Championship:

Sophomores made up 5 of the 7 top runners in the boys race, suggesting that Merced County has a bright future in distance running.
Livingston’s Nuno Espadinhe and Buhach Colony’s Andrew Ray ran virtually side-by-side through splits of 5:23 and 10:55. Eventually, Espadinhe created a 20 meter gap that Ray could not cover. Both runners finished under the old course record of 16:33, with Espadinhe prevailing in 16:20. He looks to be a contender for a state meet berth in SJS Division 4.

On the team side, defending champions Atwater returned only one of last year’s top 7 (5 of the 6 non-returnees left the sport, only one was a senior), but the Falcons reloaded well enough to hold off Buhach Colony 31-35. The Falcons also placed 4 runners on the all-county team.
