SAL FINALS SUMMARY
BY JOHN LUNT, COLTON HS
10/29/05

Mother Nature was kind on this brisk Saturday morning at Pacific High School, keeping temperatures during race time in the 60’s. Pacific made for a fairly challenging course with its single track switchbacks at the start and finish and the gradual climb to the top of Perris Hill. Most of the course other than the hill was fast and flat cruising by pine trees, the local swimming pool, tennis courts, Perris Hill Bowl, and Fiscalini Field. The beginning and finishing was on the Pirate track.

In the Girls Varsity race, many expected Cajon to be on top with their strong trio of Kelsea Plimmer, Nicole Chesnut, and Lauren Nila who have finished 1-2-3 in many races throughout the year. Plimmer led from the start and ran strong and hard as did their other 2 in the openings of the race. San Gorgonio’s seniors would have none of it on this day as they started to gain ground with Tracey Melgoza (20.27), Tanesha Hunt(20.28) and Hollie Hart (20.42) shifting into the 2-4 spots and never looking back. They solidified a strong scoring for San G. with 24 points to Cajon’s 45. Plimmer held on and took a commanding lead becoming the 2 time champ in 19.51 and only being a sophomore. They will miss her once she moves with her family to Idaho. Briianna Carlile, only a freshman and daughter of a former Cajon XC coach nipped her teammate Nicole Chesnut for 5th place. San G had 2 other all-leaguers in 7th place Delfina Smith and 8th place Darika Murphy. Dannielle Cardoza of Pacific was 9th and Lena Leoardi of Arroyo Valley took 10th to round out the top 10. The last all league spot went to Courtney McCabe of improving girls team San Bernardino. Cajon and San G shared a league title as their season ending scoring points were the same. Coach John Hinkleman’s San Bernardino Cardinals took 3rd with 83 points.

The boys race had many top runners who could have had a chance to take the top spot. Kameron Ulmer was the favorite in many’s books and was in the 2nd place spot behind last year’s champ, Lee Knowlton, moving up the switchbacks. Ulmer’s teammate Chris Cordova was in 3rd heading up the switchbacks. By the mile and a half mark, the leaders became Cordova, Knowlton and freshmen Mike Miranda, seeming to come out of nowhere. Ulmer made a late surge, but faded and took 8th in 17.28 with teammates Joey Ibarra in 7th (17.27) and Albert Diaz in 9th (17.30). San G commanded the top spots with Miranda becoming the champ in 16.53, Knowlton taking 2nd in 17.01, Fancisco Roveriano in 4th in 17.19, and Victor Perez in 5th in 17.20. Cordova held on racing a very hard fought race in 3rd place in 17.13. Miranda surprised many, even himself, pulling away to a first place victory in 16.53 with Knowlton right behind in at 17.01. John Blum of San Bernardino took 6th in 17.25 with John Martinez of Pacific taking the last all league spot at 17.41. Coach Chuck Sanchez’ San G team won the race, making it a double, with 24 points to Eric Abrams Cajon Cowboys with 43 points. Ryan Sack’s Pacific took 3rd with 82 points heading them to CIF. San G was the outright boys champion.

Coach Ryan Sack and his Pacific staff ran an excellent race as all went smoothly. Next year Carter moves to the CBL and Colton comes back into the SAL.
