Paramount Boys Gets Last Word with Warren in SGVL Finals, Warren Girls Romp

Not a day went by that the Paramount High boys cross country team didn't talk about its loss to Warren in a San Gabriel Valley League dual meet three weeks ago.
Paramount had the last word in the San Gabriel Valley League finals at La Mirada Park on Friday.
The Pirates rebounded from their first dual meet loss since 1999, to notch a 27-47 victory to forge a tie for first with Warren and clinch a share of their eighth consecutive league title. Lynwood was third with 89 points.

Warren senior Brandon Parrish and Pedro Saucedo, who both beat Contreras in the dual meet, were second and third in 16:17 and 16:21.
"We had to get our minds straight," Contreras said. "We just told ourselves that this is our last league race. I promised them that I was going to give it my all. We were disillusioned to lose but this gave us something to work. It made it more satisfying.''
It was a bittersweet day for Warren, which was the last league team to defeat Paramount in a dual meet in 1999 only to have the Pirates come back to win in the league finals to earn a co-championship.
"We were devastated to lose (to Warren) but we knew it was all mental," Paramount senior Edgar Vasquez said about the 25-30 defeat. "It was the little things that killed us. We were a little bit too confident and we didn't have the best race. We weren't prepared. It just wasn't our day.''
The Pirates were at their best on Friday. Paramount had its five scoring runners among the top eight and ahead of Warren's third runner in 11th. Seniors Edgar Vasquez and Mauricio Hernandez were fifth and sixth in 16:29 and 16:33. Junior Jose Romo (16:37) and sophomore Jesus Hernandez (16:49) rounded out the scoring in eighth and ninth.
The Warren girls, led by the 1-2 finish of sophomores Mariana Edwards and Miranda Martinez-Moad in 19:01 and 19:21, won with 21 points to finish well ahead of Paramount (59) and Lynwood (62).
The top three teams qualified for the Southern Section preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College on Nov. 12.
Warren didn't equal a sweep of the top six places in the 2003 and 2004 league finals but the Bears were still dominant with five runners in the top eight and seven in the top 13. Senior Justine Akil was fifth in 19:38 for Warren. Senior teammates China Fleming and Pamela Briones were seventh and eighth in 19:53 and 19:57.
