31st Annual Bell-Jeff Invitational
Saturday, September 25, 2004 @ Griffith Park, Los Angeles (SS) - 2.9 miles
Matusak (14:35) and Vahoviak (17:47) post fastest times of the day.

Loyola's Mark Matusak (Div. 1 boys), Burbank Burroughs' Katie Vahoviak
(Div. 2/3 girls) and Brentwood's Tani Brown (Div. 5 girls) repeat as individual
champions; McFarland (Div. 4 boys) and Maranatha (Div. 5 boys) defend team titles.

If Mark Matusak had missed high-end training sessions in recent weeks due to recovering from mononucleosis, then it is scary to think where he'll be when he is 100% fit.
The Loyola standout became the only three-time winner in the 31-year history of the Bell-Jeff/Griffith Park Invitational on Saturday, covering the 2.9-mile layout in 14:35 to capture the Div. 1 title. Matusak's win, combined with a second-place finish from Matt Miller (14:51) and three other individuals clocking sub-16:00 times, allowed the Cubs (ranked No. 1 in Div. II) to post a convincing victory against Marina, which edged Loyola, 94-98, for the Div. 1 team title last year.
Matusak's 14:35 also gave him three of the top 20 times recorded at the Bell-Jeff Invite, including his 14:20 in 2002 and 14:29 last year. He is also the only athlete, male or female, to hold that distinction. Former Glendale standout Richard Erbes still holds the meet record at 14:10.
Other notable performances in the race included Monroe's Gabriel Guzman (5th at City Section final last year) taking third in 15:02 and Bell-Jeff's Gerard Herkey continuing his string of strong performances to take fourth in 15:07. Herkey opened the season with wins at Morro Bay, the Burbank All-City Meet and Woodbridge, which is why Bell-Jeff Coach and Meet Director Jim Couch elected to have his senior run in Div. 1, while the rest of the Guards competed in Div. 5.
In the combined Div. 2/3 race, Norwalk relied on the winning effort of Eddie Perez (15:12) to hold off Burbank Burroughs, 52-64. Northview's David Smith (15:23), Moorpark's Kerry Burns (15:41), Burroughs' Adrian Harrison (15:50) and La Canada's Ben Frandsen (15:52) rounded out the top five in a race that featured no ranked teams, but seven sub-16:00 performances.
One of the nation's best small-school programs was on display again in the Div. 4 race, as McFarland (preseason No. 2 in the state in Div. IV) captured its seventh team title since 1997 with a dominant 29-93 victory against Salesian (No. 4 in SS Div. IV).
While Carmel (preseason No. 1 in the state in Div. IV) was running away from the competition in Palo Alto at the Stanford Invitational, McFarland posted the third-fastest team time (79:37) behind only Div. 1 champion Loyola (76:28) and runner-up Marina (78:50).
McFarland's Octavio Ruiz was one of only 3 individuals (along with Loyola's Mark Matusak and Matt Miller in Div. 1) to break the 15:00 barrier, distancing himself from the competition early en route to the win in 14:57. Santa Ynez's Carlyle Eubank was second in 15:31, but McFarland supported Ruiz's win by placing four more runners in the top 12, including Jaime Bravo (3rd, 15:48) and Baltazar Topete (4th, 15:55).
The outcome of the Div. 5 race was the most predictable of the day, as the Southern Section's top-ranked team, Maranatha, cruised to an 18-59 victory against Brentwood.
While No. 2 Flintridge Prep elected to travel to Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitational and move up a division (where it finished fourth in a loaded Div. IV race), Maranatha posted a team time more than 5:30 ahead of Brentwood, relying on a victory from David Martinez (16:16) and four other individuals placing in the top six.
Had Gerard Herkey elected to run with the rest of the Bell-Jeff team (he finished fourth in Div. 1), the Guards would have taken second. Instead, Bell-Jeff finished third with 89 points, as Jeff Pang broke up the Maranatha pack by taking third in 16:21.

GIRLS' SUMMARIES

Simi Valley's Anna Sperry began the run of eight consecutive varsity races in impressive fashion, cruising to the easy victory in the Div. 1 race in 17:55. Sperry would end up being one of only two females during the day to break the 18:00 barrier on the 2.9-mile course, as Burbank Burroughs' Katie Vahoviak also accomplished the feat just over an hour later.
Simi Valley also captured the Div. 1 team title, beating Birmingham (last year's City Section runner-up) by a 52-67 margin.
Birmingham's Emmaline Hartel (the reigning City Section individual champion) took second in 18:24, while teammate Jennifer Hernandez was third in 18:48. Glendale's Heidi Diaz, fresh off a big victory at Thursday's Pacific League meet, was one of 10 female athletes to break 19:00 on Saturday, taking fourth in 18:59.
Ana Rodriguez (19:02) rounded out the top five to help Glendale to a third-place finish, but Simi Valley's depth -- with Christy Severance (19:04) and Laura Willeford (19:17) taking sixth and seventh, and two others finishing in the top 20 -- was enough for the victory.
Burroughs' Katie Vahoviak says the longer the course, the better.
Well, the senior will have her chance to test her skills on a true 3-mile course at the upcoming Kenny Staub Invitational at Crescenta Valley Park, where she'll run in the Div. 1 race, according to Indian Coach John Peebles.
But Vahoviak made quick work of the competition on the shorter Griffth Park course Saturday, posting the fastest time of the day to win the Division 2/3 race in 17:47.
Vahoviak, who set a course record on the 2.7-mile Johnny Carson Park layout at the Burbank All-City Meet and then followed it up with a second-place effort at Thursday's Foothill League Meet at Saugus' Central Park (losing to Saugus' Shannon Murakami, 18:35 to 18:37), was one of two females to defend her individual title Saturday.
But Vahoviak wasn't alone in her success, as the support of Sadee Martinez (5th, 19:04), Adriana Powers (6th, 19:07), Michelle Martinez (10th, 19:36) and Lilyana Marejon (12th, 19:55) was more than enough to lift Burroughs to the team title with a 34-69 win against La Canada.
Burroughs also recorded the fastest team time of the day at 95:29, well ahead of Simi Valley's Div. 1 winning time of 96:49. Only two other teams -- Birmingham (98:22) and Glendale (99:14) in Div. 1 -- clocked better than 100:00.
Lindsay Mayer (3rd, 18:55) and Morgan Sheppard (4th, 19:02) continued to carry the load for La Canada, which won team titles at the invitational in 2001 and 2002 under Coach Tony Haynes.
Marina, which won the Div. 1 title at last year's event, took third in the Div. 2/3 race.
The Div. 4 race showcased two of the Antelope Valley's best small-school programs, as Paraclete (No. 7 in Div. IV) and Lancaster Desert Christian (No. 4 in Div. V) battled it out for bragging rights, with Paraclete prevailing, 55-72, to earn its first team title.
Heidi Rocha (18:29) earned the win for the Spirits, with teammate Kaitlyn Herta (18:40) close behind.
Santa Ynez's Liza Truax (3rd, 19:40), Santa Maria St. Joseph's Daina Tubbs (4th, 19:48) and Lancaster Desert Christian's Nicole Richards (5th, 19:53) rounded out the group of sub-20:00 competitors.
The Div. 5 race proved to be one of the best showdowns of the day, as No. 1 Flintridge Prep and No. 2 Maranatha squared off for the first of several meetings this season, with Maranatha edging out the Rebels, 39-43.
Flintridge Prep Coach Michael Roffina, whose team had a breakout effort at last year's invite en route to winning the Div. 5 title, received another strong performance from sophomore Lauren Von Der Ahe (3rd, 19:22). But thanks to Makenzie Klien's second-place finish (19:07), along with the support of Rebecca Cassou (4th, 19:34), Rachel Gill (5th, 19:48) and Sara Ireland (6th, 19:59), Maranatha was able to create enough breathing room to compensate for its 5th runner finishing in 22nd place.
Flintridge Prep had all 5 of its scoring runners in the top 12, but the Rebels -- who opened the season with wins at the La Canada Flintridge All-City Meet and Phil Ryan Invitational -- were more than 2 minutes off the impressive 99:10 they clocked last year.
Still, Roffina had plenty to smile about at the end of the day, as freshman Skye Aaron (younger sister of the team's No. 3 runner Saturday, sophomore Melody Aaron) won the Div. 4/5 junior varsity race in convincing fashion in a time that would have been a second off the Rebels' No. 5 runner, another freshman, Kathryn Iwata.
Defending Div. V state champion Tani Brown of Brentwood joined Burroughs' Katie Vahoviak as the only repeat winners on the female side, cruising to an easy win in 18:40, just off last year's victorious mark of 18:38.
Amber Herkey (8th, 20:16) and Gabrielle Gonzalez (9th, 20:26) led Bell-Jeff to a third-place finish.
