"Catching Their Breath" - Joe Hartman's Interviews!

MARIE LAWRENCE – SOPH. – RENO H.S.
1ST PLACE, Lg School – 17:46

DyeStatCal: We’re here with National runner-up Mel Lawrence of Reno High. Marie, any idea what your time was?
Marie Lawrence: I have no idea; at the two mile mark my time was 12-flat. (She ended up at 17:46)

DS: Any incidents out there on the course?
ML: Yeah I got stung by a bee on my butt. (Laughing.) It hurt really bad! It was right up on the hill, like the last 800 meters maybe.

DS: Obviously it doesn’t look like you’ve lost anything from last year. What are your plans for this year and how do you feel?
ML: I feel pretty good. I just want to stay healthy and make sure my team stays healthy and just have a really good season.

DS: Your sister (Collier) is off to Washington State. Can you tell us how she’s doing up there and has she raced?
ML: She’s doing pretty well. She really likes it up there. She raced once but it was unattached and she has a race in Seattle I think this weekend but I’m not sure how she did.

HANNAH HODGKINSON – SOPH. – PLEASANT VALLEY H.S.
2ND PLACE, Lg School – 18:56

DyeStatCal: Why don’t you tell us about the course? Had you ever raced here before?
Hannah Hodgkinson: I have not ever raced here before. Our team came here last year but I had other commitments and I couldn’t make it. So it’s my first time here and I was really excited to come out on this course. I figured it was a tough course but my coach (Chris Gulbrandsen) said ‘You’re really going to love this course, it’s really fun” so I was really excited to run and I just came out here to do my best. I thought I had a good race, it felt good.

DS: You had an excellent race. It took the national runner-up to beat you. Did you have any episodes of any bees?
HH: No I didn’t. Well, when we first started there was a bee buzzing around my head but when they shot the gun, I didn’t have any more encounters.

DS: You had a real good track season, 8th in the state in the 2-mile, and you took your (cross country) team to state last year? What do the Pleasant Valley Vikings hope to accomplish this year?
HH: We’re hoping to win sections (NS) and go to state as a team. We did it last year and we believe we can do it again. That’s our main goal.

DS: Once the state meet is over, do you have any plans at the end of the season?
HH: I do. I plan to join the Silver State Striders and go to the national (Junior Olympics) cross country meet in Illinois, in Chicago.

DS: OK, well have a great time and good luck for the rest of the season to you, Hannah. It was a tremendous race today.
HH: Thank you very much.
