Flintridge
Prep girls break La Canada's
8-year stranglehold on local title!
Flintridge Prep's McLean wins
unprecedented third consecutive boys' title!
Thanks to Erik
"E.B." Boal for the following summary/results!
Flintridge Prep's girls
(No. 1 in CIF, No. 2 in the state in Division V) ended La Canada's 8-year
run as team champions, beating the Spartans, 25-46, with Flintridge Sacred
Heart (No. 4 in CIF, No. 8 in the state in Division IV) being hurt by
the absence of 2 varsity runners finishing 3rd with 65.
La Canada's duo of junior Lindsay
Mayer (20:37.84) and sophomore Morgan Sheppard (20:56.10) looked strong
from the start, quickly distancing themselves from Flintridge Prep's pack,
but after that it was all Rebels, as Mike Roffina's squad took the next
six spots, as well as 10th, led by senior Hannah Vaughan's 3rd-place finish
(21:20.73).
Flintridge Prep's packing was impressive, as they had 79 seconds between
1 and 5, with sophomore Lauren Von Der Ahe (first high school cross-country
meet) taking 4th in 21:44.73.
Flintridge
Prep's win also ended La Canada's run of more than 120 consecutive regular-season
meet victories, which includes nine straight undefeated Rio Hondo Leaugue
titles. My unofficial count is 127 since they lost to Pasadena Poly in
a nonleague dual meet in 1995, but I'm going to have to double check before
swearing to it.
Still, Mayer's victory was the seventh
by a La Canada female in the 9-year history of the meet and fourth in
a row, with Nicole Bonino being the only back-to-back champion in 1998
and 1999. Senior Christina Snider was the top finisher for Flintridge
Sacred Heart, taking 9th in 23:02.14
On the boys' side, Flintridge
Prep senior Tom McLean became the first athlete in meet history to win
three straight titles, distancing himself from the field
to post an easy 59-second win in 16:45.31. His victory also highlighted
the third straight and fifth overall team title for the Rebels (No. 1
in CIF and state in Division V), who defeated St. Francis, 32-43. La Canada
was third with 48.
Tony Myint supported McLean, taking
2nd in 17:44.32, before a pair of St. Francis runners and three La Canada
runners came in, taking advantage of the absence of Flintridge Prep's
Gus Zoell (tendinitis in his knee) and Tom Adams (away visiting colleges),
who would have most likely placed in the top 5.
Thomas Flynn (8th, 18:25.30), Nik
Miller (10th, 18:40.12) and Jeff Russell (11th, 18:43.56) rounded out
the scoring effort for the Rebels. Peter Grace (3rd, 17:53.02) was the
top finisher for St. Francis and Ben Frandsen (5th, 18:08.44) led the
Spartans.

Pre-season Foot Locker West "Hot
100" selection Tom McLean
is still among the most under-rated harriers in the Southland thanks
to competing in Division V, but the talented senior aims to continue
leading his Flintridge Prep teammates to more team success in 2004!
