Santa Barbara County Championships
Saturday, October 30, 2004 @ Lompoc River Course (SS) - 3 miles
Lompoc girls win 11th straight title! Cabrillo boys smash record!

The course is a flat 3 mile spectator friendly course. Thanks to the recent rains, the course was actually in the best condition it has been in for quite some time. The weather was cool and the course was firm, making for some nice fast times.

The boys team competition was dominated by Cabrillo High School who seemed to want to show everybody that their race a Mt. SAC a week ago was not truly indicative of how good they are. With everybody in the lineup, they cranked out a team course record 78:21, smashing their team time from last year by 1:46. The Braves from Lompoc were second, followed by county rival and PAC 5 League leading Righetti. Dos Pueblos High followed in 4th to lead the Santa Barbara area contingient.

Individually, for the most part it was a two man race from the mile mark on. Michael Coe of Cabrillo and Joaquin Gomez of Carpinteria battled neck and neck the entire race until Gomez was able to just get away at the finish. Both runners eclipsed the old course record of 14:59 jointly held by Ronnie Buchanan (Righetti-1997) and Henry Hagenbausch (Cate-2001) by running 14:54 and 14:55 respectively.

On the girl's side, Lompoc continued their county dominance. Running without their number one runner, Audrey Barrett, for one more week, the Lady Braves were able to use their superior depth to record their 11th consecutive county title. Cabrillo's girls finished a nice second and thus allowed the two Lompoc Valley schools to finish first and second in both varsity races.

Individually it was a two person race, Liza Truax of Santa Ynez and Diana Tubbs of St. Joseph for the first 2 miles, however at the 2 mile mark Miranda McCune of San Marcos made a big move and ran away with the race while recording a 36 second win. Truax finished second with Tubbs a close third.
