Placer's Ken Parnow, Kim Crouch earn victories!

Whoa! Easy there, young one!

"Catching Their Breath" at the Placer Invitational

Shaun Boyte – Sophomore – Del Oro HS

2nd place – 15:38

DyeStat: What did you think of the course? A brand new course, what did you think?

Shaun Boyte: I thought it was great. Running through the creek… that was just a blast. I just love running through the creek…got to get wet! It was a flat course, a little hilly, and it was great terrain. The red dirt was just damp enough where I ran just right through it. It was great.

DS: You’re in a great league (Sierra Foothill) and your finals are Friday. Tell us how that race will shake down.

SB: Losing our 2nd runner kind of hurts us. We don’t really have a full team now. We have seven runners but losing the 2nd place is kind of tough. I’m hoping to get out there and run tough against Tim (Cannon-Rocklin) and against Kevin (Hougen-Rocklin) and then also Ken (Parlow). Here Ken and I had an awesome race today and I’m just hoping to get out there and run hard.

DS: Have you had any youth running experiences before you got to Del Oro?

SB: Yeah, actually in 7th and 8th grade I went to Nationals. My top year was 8th grade out in Georgia and I ended up taking 2nd place.

(Shaun finished 2nd at the 2002 XC Junior Olympics in Carrollton, GA in the youth boys age group representing the Silver State Striders.)

Ken Parnow – Senior – Placer HS

1st place – 15:38

DyeStat: You just had a great duel with Shaun Boyte. Why don’t you talk about how the race unfolded because you had a lead and it got very close at the finish. Take us through mile-by-mile.

Ken Parnow: First mile I was feeling way good, maybe too good. I was at 4:50 first mile and it felt like a 5:10 almost. I was way off pace. But I was like “I’Il just pull through it” and I’ll try to recover and pick up for the last mile. So I just ran the race and I was runnin’ up ahead and the wind was starting to catch me a little bit and I was waiting for Shaun to catch up. I slowed down on purpose and he was starting to catch up but he never wanted to pass me. Right at the top of the hill we turned left and he came up and passed me and I drafted off of him until the finish because (sighs) that first mile… that was tiring.

DS: You have your league championships on Friday. Team-wise and individual-wise, what do you think’s going to happen at Muller Ranch?

KP: Team-wise I think we’ll do great. We’re feeling more confident every day. Every day we’re practicing non-stop, we had a storm the other day and we practiced right through it with awesome times.

DS: Coach Randall Fee is in his second year here at Placer. What kind of influence has he had on the boy’s team since he took over?

KP: We had Coach Hyatt. With Hyatt, he was more toward the girls’ side and the talent there. Randall came in and he wanted to put some effort into the boys and no one had really done that, and it’s been awesome. Everyone clings onto him, the whole varsity team likes him. And we have a great asst. coach too, John, who helps out TREMENDOUSLY.

Kim Crouch – Senior – Placer HS

1st place – 18:17

DyeStat: Tell us how your race went and what you liked about the course.

Kim Crouch: The race went really well. Unfortunately part of the course got flooded, so we had to cut that part out. Other than that, it was nicely plotted out – a lot better than Folsom. The Croc Pot was awesome to run through…felt like an old school cross country course again.

DS: Is it the Croc Pot or the Croc Pit? What are we calling that now?

KC: Oh, I like to call it the Croc Pot (laughing).

DS: Well it cooked up some exciting moments, that’s for sure. You were the section champion in 2002 and had to overcome a series of injuries and illness last year. What do your think about your prospects for the league finals now that Caitlin Chock has graduated, and beyond that?

KC: I think sometimes about it, not too much. Mainly I just I hope to improve more in every race. And with league coming up, I just want to hit my personal goal which is to break 18, so that’s what I’m going to try to do.

DS: In 2002 the Placer girls were 3rd at State and last year you were 3rd at State. You’re currently ranked in 7th. Do you have any message for anyone compiling those rankings.

KC: We’re gonna whip their butt! (Laughs)

DS: You’ve continued to run past the state meet the last couple years. Tell us about that experience and what you’re doing with Junior Olympics this year.

KC: I’ve been running for the Junior Olympics for the last two years for the Buffalo Chips. It’s a lot of fun and I can’t get enough of it. I’m excited to go this year. I won’t be going to Foot Locker which is (pauses) unfortunate because some people want me to go. They want to see how I’d do, but I’d rather go to Chicago and hang out with my girls and have a different experience … It’s similar to state but not really because you’re competing against people that you don’t even know, and it’s so much fun.

Randall Fee – Meet Director/Head Coach – Placer HS

DyeStat: Randall, last year this meet was at Sierra College. Why don’t you tell us about how races went and the new course in general.

Randall Fee: Our whole goal two months ago - when we decided we couldn’t race at Sierra, and we didn’t want to go to Folsom - was to create our own course. Our main goal was to go ahead and make it an old-fashioned cross country course. We needed a facility where we had the restrooms and the parking, and we instantly came over to Cool because Tim Tweekmeyer (sp) and myself run over here all the time because these are some of the most beautiful trails in the area… it was a natural.

DS: Coaching question: Like they say about the good programs: they don’t rebuild, they just reload. On the girls side, with freshman Burke and Dadigan, it seems like you’re all set for the future.

RF: Early on in August, first part of September. when we were doing speed workouts on the track I noticed Jordan Burke and Michelle Dadigan had a little “special-ness” to them. But I wanted to bring them up slow, and they had not trained like we train at the high school level. So they were pretty much behind everybody... But due, not to the ‘mileage’ that we do, but I feel the ‘quality mileage’ that we do with the hills in the American River Canyon, these girls just picked it up very fast. At the second Sierra Foothill meet, we moved them up to varsity… and at Cal Poly they were #2/3 for the team.

DS: So already Top 5 for the team. Hyatt, Gruber, Vaughan… there’s been some really special runners that come out of here. Kim was 4th in the State in 2002 and the Section Champion. Can you comment on what Kim Crouch has meant to your program?

RF: Kim, of course, for four years has run varsity. She has just now – we did a big hug today, and she said, “Coach, I’m running like when I was a sophomore!” – she is just back to that form. Kim is one of those fortunate female runners that has maintained her body basically all the way through all four years. She still has that sleek running body and she is a true machine out there and her best running days are ahead of her. She ran easy today; and a big smile at the end.

DS: And the boys?

RF: The boys have just moved into the section Division 3 top ranking. They have just been improving all year and that’s due to well, Ken Parnow, our #1 senior runner, and also sophomore Dan Labrador who is running extremely well along with junior Josh Vaughan. We’re rounding out our top five right now and the boys won at Cal Poly last weekend. We’re nine points away from Rocklin in the Sierra Foothill League, so they’re getting close, but that Rocklin team’s awful strong.
