Arroyo Verde Park, Ventura ~ Oct. 14, 2004 ~ Sunny and Mild

The second Channel League meet of the season was held on Thursday, October
14 at the challenging Arroyo Verde Park course in Ventura. A hilly measured
3 mile course, the Arroyo Verde circuit includes a variety of terrain
including grass, dirt, asphalt and gravel.

The day started off with the junior varsity girls' race at 4pm. With the
first 1200 meters being a constant climb, the challenge is to be patient
until the course decides to thankfully descent into the quiet valley just
below Rattlesnake Hill. Becky Brinkenhoff of Ventura, usually a blaster
from the get go, reliantly led a sea of Buena blue off first 400 meters of
grass and up the step incline that makes up Rattlesnake Hill. Once on the
narrow dirt trails, the patience was starting to wear off and Brinkenhoff
made her first big move. By the time the turn was made into the valley,
Becky had a sizeable lead over teammates Lauren Martinez and Minnie
Broccoli-Kellner. Through the mile at 6:54, Becky had a 10 second lead on
Martinez and a sizeable lead on the field. This would continue for the rest
of the race with Brinkenhoff pushing the downhill while maintaining a steady
pace on the uphills. At the conclusion, Brinkenhoff had run a second mile
in 7:02 and the third mile in 6:47 to run a very respectable 20:43 to
capture her second straight Channel League Junior Varsity Meet. Lauren
Martinez cruised home second in 21:08 and Minnie Broccoli-Kellner snagged
third. Junior Kristin Schaff ran a strong second half of the race to finish
fourth with Briana Lua being the first Buena finisher at 5th. Teamwise, the
Ventura Cougars scored 17 points to capture their second straight Channel
League meet.

For the junior varsity boys, Ventura quickly put themselves at the front of
the race. Led by freshman Greg Woodburn, the Cougars had 5 in the top 10
for the start of the race. With Woodburn and junior Sean Doll leading group
up Rattlesnake Hill, the Ventura duo quickly broke from the field and
extended their lead. Through the last mile, Sean Doll would move to the
front and cruise through a very comfortable 18:10 victory. Greg Woodburn
finished 2nd in 18:21. Meanwhile, just behind Greg, the battles for 3rd and
4th and 5th and 6th would go toe to toe for the last 300 meters. Dorrian
Schuyler of Dos Pueblos would barely nudge David Trejo of Ventura with both
receiving a finish time of 18:31 while Mark Tapia, a senior in his first
year of cross country for Buena would match Ventura's Ben Bernaldo step for
step with Tapia getting the nod on a lean with both runners recording 18:41.
In the team competition, the Cougars of Ventura once again top home the
first place prize, placing five in the top 9 and scoring 21 points. Buena
was the runner up team.

At 5pm, the gun went off to signal the start of the girls' varsity race.
Kimberly Donatelli also let it signal the return of her tour at the front of
Channel League races. After finishing out of the money in the first league
meet at Dos Pueblos, it appeared Kimberly was determined create a different
image on her home course. Leading the race from the very start, she charged
up Rattlesnake Hill and opened up a gap on the Ventura Cougar pack. Coming
through the mile in 6:25. Kimberly had a 8 to 10 second lead on the rest of
the field. This would gradually widen to close to 20 seconds just before
the second mile. Heading up around the baseball field loop at the start of
the third mile, it was Donatelli of Buena followed by Tara Bryant and Molly
Bailey of Ventura with the fast closing Miranda McCune of San Marcos hanging
just behind the Ventura duo. As the race headed up Maintenance Hill with
less than 800 meters to go, Donatelli was firmly in the lead. McCune had
moved into second and was whittling down the difference between first and
second while Bailey and Tara Bryant lead the rest of the Ventura squad. At
the end, Donatelli would win in 19:21 with McCune closing the gap to 13
seconds at the end, finishing second. Bailey would finish third in 19:45
and Tara Bryant was fourth at 19:47. Rounding out the top five would be
Ventura teammate, Laura Mason at 20:16. Ventura would win the second
Channel League meet with 26 points while Buena would finish second with 53
points.

Trying to send a message early, the seven Ventura High runners had placed
themselves in the top 12 within 200 meters of the start of the boys' varsity
race. Led by Chris Gurney and Taylor Garrett, the Cougars appeared to be
pushing hard early on this very unforgiving course. With both Buena and
Ventura training at Arroyo Verde Park on a regular basis, it would be
interesting to see which local team would best use the course to their
advantage. Early on, it appeared to be the Cougars. Would the fast early
pace come back to haunt them in the second half of the race. This didn't
appear to be a concern for Gurney or Garrett as they quickly separated
themselves from the field, hoping their teammates would follow. However, it
was Tyler Rattray of Dos Pueblos, Donovan Smith of Buena and Eli Kupperman
of San Marcos who seemed ready, willing and able to deal with the oxygen
debt rewards of the fast pace. Down the grass to the bottom of the park,
this string of runners would be joined by Willaim Yochum and Austin Tovar of
Ventura. Moving up Vista Bluff, Gurney and Garrett would open up the gap on
the field. Rattray and Smith would face off for the rest of the race while
Kupperman, Yochum, Tovar. Samuel Woodard of San Marcos, Stephen Hennek,
Gavin Wright and Michael Barnes of Ventura would all stay within 3 seconds
of each other for most of the race. The team battle seemed to securely in
the hands of the Ventura Cougars, but individual places and the second place
team spot were all up for grabs. Around the baseball field and up
Maintenance Hill, the leaders stayed the same through the top 4 spots but
the battle for the next 6 places was in constant flux. Down the trail and
back on the grass for the finish, it was clear that Ventura would win the
team title at the second Channel League meet and it was clear that Chris
Gurney would win the race. Much of the rest was cloudy. Gurney would win
in 16:57, 6 seconds in front of Taylor Garrett. Rattray would hold off the
fast closing Donovan Smith to take home 3rd in 17:29, 3 seconds before
Smith. The next 4 places would be span 3 seconds. Kupperman and Yochum
would finish in 17:37 with the San Marcos runner earning the higher place.
Austin Tovar, a sophomore in his first varsity race would finish in 17:38
and Woodard of San Marcos would finish at 17:40. Ventura would win the team
title with 29 points while Dos Pueblos' total of 64 was good enough for
second place, just in front of Buena.

With two of the three league meets now history, the Channel League teams
will be preparing for the final league meet of the season on November 4 at
Camino Real Park. A fast, flat course, the Camino Real Park course is
usually an excellent indicator of what the top teams and individuals will
run at CIF finals or State.
