Huntington Beach Invit. (SS)
Recap courtesy of HB coach Tomy DiMarco

Hi Guys,

Here are the results from our meet. We were hoping to bring Eugene a first place trophy - but he was just as happy with 2nd!! Busy day, Eugene walked three times today including once for us!!! The OC Sheriff's SQAT Team came by around the same time adding to the fun (over 30 people visiting at the same time). I attached some pics from the race and from our day at the hospital. Eugene is expected to stay in the hospital until at least mid week next week. The guys shaved their heads and wrote E.K. on their arms for him and Eugene wants to have his head shaved this week before next weeks Preview!

Thanks again for the kind words!

Tony

Race summary:

Girls Varsity

A pack of Olivas, McRae and Paul came through the mile at 6:01 pulling away from the field. At 2miles, Olivas started to pull away with both McRae and Paul trying to counter her mover (12:17 to 12:19). Oilivas opened a sizable lead only to have McRae close the distance over the last 200 meters, Paul 3rd. (All three under the meet record set last year!) Newport Harbor with good packing and a late charge passed up Los Alamitos and Mira Costa for the team awards.

Boys Varsity

Cuevas off to the races with Torres (Katella) and Rialto teammate Jared Bain through the mile in 5:03. Cuevas stood alone at 2miles (10:20) with Bain falling back, Torres second by himself at 10:34. The chase pack was where the drama was, as a pack of Tustin, HB, Rialto and Katella runners battled for the team awards. It was back and forth throughout the race as it first appeared that Katella would come on top, followed by Rialto and Tustin. HB runners ran tough and made some key moves late to move into second, Rialto took command late as Bain passed Ornelas (HB) late to clinch it for Rialto. Cuevas to the finish in record time 15:44.0 (breaking Humberto Rojas record set a year ago, 15:47.8 and becoming only the second man to break 16 on this course)
