Run under the soft fog cover of UCSB¹s pleasant Lagoon course, the Blue Lagoon Invitational was once again the host for some outstanding performances.

Britney Grimes of Centennial of Bakersfield, the defending champion, had her third outstanding performance on this course in three years. Winning the race for the second year in a row, Britney flew around the course in 17:50, tying Michele Lewis Burns, the current Buena coach , for third on the All Time Lagoon List. Leading from the gun, Britney pulled the field out and helped four other girls run their way on to the top 25 list of this stored course. Oriana Campbell of Ventura and Krista Roessler of Dos Pueblos waged a battle for second over the first two and 1/2 miles before Campbell was able to open up a slight gap over the last 1/2 mile. Finishing in 18:14, Campbell ran a lifetime best for the second time this week, bettering the 18:26 she ran on the Dos Pueblos course just a scant four days earlier. Roessler, vastly improved from last season, finished in 18:32 to capture third place. The next two spots wore the black and gold of Ventura High, as this outstanding program put three girls under 19 minutes for the first time in the history of the school. Junior Jessica Bryant, the runner up to Grimes at the Morro Bay Invitational, was also under 19 minutes for the second time this week, improving to 18:43 for another Cougar lifetime best. Also running a lifetime best and earning a top 25 mark for this stored course was sophomore Lauren Martinez of Ventura. Dipping under 19 minutes for the first time in her career, she crossed the finish line in 18:57. Also sneaking under 19 minutes by a mere second for the first time as a high school athlete was freshman Beth Pasko of Cabrillo. Tarah Bolden of Cabrillo, a sophomore was seventh in 19:16, just a second in front of hometown rival, Audrey Barrett of Lompoc. Alyssa Robinson of Nordhoff was ninth at 19:27 and Carie Fabing of Lompoc gave Lompoc two in the top 10 by finishing 10th in 19:29.

While this is not a team competition and team scores are not kept, several teams performed extremely well on the course. Ventura turned in a very fine team time of 96:28, 27 seconds slower than their school record time of 96:01 for this course set last year. Meanwhile, Lompoc, Cabrillo and Nordhoff once again showed they were forces to be considered on the Division III level. Lompoc put five runners across the finish line in 101:11. Vastly improved Cabrillo turned in a very solid 102:03 and traditional strong Nordhoff showed they are back with a fine time of 103:15.
On the male side of the race, sophomore Michael Coe of Cabrillo HS in Lompoc continues to turn in impressive performances. Improving upon his third place finish at the Ojai Invitational, Michael ran away from the field with an excellent time of 15:19, making him the fastest sophomore to ever run this course and tying him for fourth on the all time list with Buchanon¹s Fernando Cabana, a sub 9 minute 3200 meter runner when he was in high school. Behind Michael, juniors Joaquin Gomez of Carpinteria and Eduardo Gomez of Lompoc battled it out for second with Joaquin winning the nod at the tape, 15:41 to 15:43. These performances landed both of these gentlemen on the top 25 list. Meanwhile, another sophomore, Colin Hacker was also able to break 16 minutes, ducking under the wire at 15:58, two seconds in front of junior Chris Gurney of Ventura. Another sophomore, Nathan Longcrier of Centennial was sixth in 16:17 while Lompoc¹s Nick Martin finished seventh in 16:21 to give the Braves two finishers in the top 10. Jeff Leung of Ventura also allowed his team to have two in the top ten, finishing eighth in a lifetime best of 16:24. Nordhoff¹s Dieter Duran (16:25) and Evan Jenkins (16:35) gave the Rangers two in the top 10 also.

.

Team wise, Cabrillo is certainly ready to play on the DIII scene. Their team time of 81:24 compares favorably with some of the top DIII times turned in on this course. Meanwhile, Lompoc, another DIII power is not too far behind at 82:59 and Ventura is vastly improved under the direction of Coach Tyree Cruz, finishing in 83:55. Carpinteria also is continuing their trend over the last few years, finishing in 84:10, looking strong enough to play with the big boys in Division IV. Since they go head to head with defending State Champion Oak Park and very strong Saint Bonaventure in Tri Valley League action, they are well aware they always need to be ready to run with the best.

The Blue Lagoon Meet is the last of three races to count in the Venue Cup. Sponsored by Venue Sports in San Luis Obispo and supported by merchandize prizes from Nike and Brooks, the Venue Cup is decided by the combined time of an individual's two best races between the Morro Bay Invitational, Ojai Invitational and the Blue Lagoon Invitational. On the girls' side, the freshmen class winner and new freshman class Venue Cup record holder was Beth Pasko of Cabrillo with an average race time of 19:11. Sophomore class winner and new record holder was Lauren Martinez of Ventura with an average time of 19:17. Junior Jessica Bryant of Ventura won her division and set the divisional record with a combined time of 19:01.30 and the overall Venue Cup winner, the senior class winner and the all time leader of the Venue Cup was Britney Grimes of Centennial with an average time of 18:26.30.

On the male side, Brady Jones of San Luis Obispo was the freshman winner with an average time of 17:09.30. Sophomore Michael Coe won his class for the second year in a row, this time setting the sophomore class record with a very fine combined time of 15:38.30. In doing so, he was also the overall Venue Cup winner and the all time recorder holder for the Venue Cup. This is very impressive for any athlete and especially for a sophomore. Adding to that success is the fact that Cabrillo had 4 of the top 5 finishers in the sophomore division and a formula for annual success appears to be available for the Cabrillo crew. Joaquin Gomez of Carpinteria became the first division winner for the Warriors, capturing the title with a fine average time of 16:00.5. Joaquin, whose father is the cross country and track and field coach at Pasadena City College, looks ready to join the long line of outstanding distance runners trained under the guidance of long time coach John Larralde. Dan Nunn of San Luis Obispo becomes the first three time divisional winner at the Venue Cup, duplicating his victories as a sophomore and a junior by averaging 15:47 to secure the senior class title and place himself second on the all time list. The meet directors of the Morro Bay Invitational, the Ojai Invitational and the Blue Lagoon Invitational would like to thank Venue Sports for their tremendous support of the sport of cross country.
