          The cross country season started with a bang as runners took off over Lynbrook High School's campus. The Lynbrook center meet hosted a race which let runners across a relativly flat 2.1 mile course of grass, dirt and cement. With fans in the stands and cheerleaders yelling, there was 'electricity' in the air. Yes, this is XC... Along with a football game that was going on at the same time.
           The Varsity girls took off on the track with a group of 82 runners. It may have been due to high numbers that Rebecca Boyle (Homestead) fell and was trampled in the first 200 yards. She recovered and joined the leaders passing the mile marker with the top ten girls at around 6:00 min. The girls race saw Alicia Follmar (Saratoga), McKayla Plank (Mitty), MayC Huang (Lynbrook) and Ranesha Robinson (Mitty) all take it out together. Follmar and Plank hit the mile together at 5:50 with Huang and Robinson a few steps back. Jill Peanasky (Homestead) was just another few strides back in 5th. 100 meters later Plank and Follmar began to leave the others.
           A half mile later Follmar started to gap Plank and then Alicia made a wrong turn which cost her a couple of seconds and allowed Plank to pull even again. The chase pack was 20 seconds back. The faux paus didn't phase her a bit. Another half mile later (the 2 mile mark in this 2.1 mile race) Follmar had a 20 second lead over Plank, who had a 15 second lead over Huang who was able to secure 3rd place at this point.
            A sprint to the finish saw Follmar break her own course record by 26 seconds with a finish time of 12:12.6 NCR. Plank finished 2nd, also under the old record, with Huang in 3rd with a new Frosh record and Robinson being the last girl to break 13:00 while finishing 4th. Jill Peanasky finished 5th. Places 3rd-5th are all Freshman so the next 4 years should be fun for these ladies. The tripped up Boyle finished 11th overall.
            In the team scoring, unnofficially Mitty won with 60 points followed closely by Los Gatos (64) and Lynbrook (70) - all 3 of these teams are in Div 2 and will meet again at CCS finals.

           Andrew Verbrugge (Mitty) pushed the pace from the get-go while Sari Subramaniam (Saratoga) tried to keep close. Nathan Young & Greg Geldman (Los Gatos) worked together the whole way. At the mile, the positions were pretty well set with the only question being, how close would everyone be to each other at the end. Sari couldn't close the gap on 1st and had to worry about the fast closing Young & Geldman in the final 100 meter sprint to the finish. Frosh Matt Petrillo finished 5th overall, providing Los Gatos with a strong 1-2-3 scoring punch.
            While Los Gatos and Saratoga each had 3 runners in the Top 10, Lynbrook got 2 in with Luis Jensen (8th) and Eugene Berson (9th). In the unnofficial team scoring, it was Los Gatos leading with 42 points, followed by Saratoga (63) and Lynbrook (91), respectively.
