Your county champions.... Sunny Hills' Claire
Kim and El Toro's Brandon Bethke!
Sunny Hills was highly ranked in preseason, but lack of depth and an
injury to its
#3 runner hert the group early on. Since then, they are now healthy
and climbing
the rankings again! Bethke ran a very smart race, sitting on Haddan
and letting the
lead group set the tempo. The pace was too slow early on, evidenced
by a pack of
about nine approaching the mile. Haddan, who seems to have not had a
true quality
break in well over a year, lacked the spring in his legs yet again this
season. Having
missed much of the winter and early spring to health ailments, we understand
from
a secondhand source that Michael's mileage had been limited (30-40 mpw)
this fall.
Michael Haddan (yellow top/red shorts) set the pace
early, but it was a slow one that
the lead pack respected. It fell right into the favor of El Toro's Brandon
Bethke.
Sunny Hills' Claire Kim (on the left, we believe)
and twin sister Stacy Kim
stuck like glue onto early race leader Crystal Reed of Fountain Valley.
In the
end, it was Claire Kim who closed best to win going away. It was Kim's
first
time competing in the County Championships, withher coach opting to skip
the
race in years past. Kim indicated she will skip Mt. SAC next weekend.
"Racing
there for prelims, finals, and Foot Locker... that's more than enough
times there."
