Coastal Conference 4-Way (SD) 10/16/03 - UCSD - 3.0 miles (some hills) |
||||
The girls’ race finished as most expected. The varsity squad from La Jolla Country Day ran as a pack with Tri-City Christian’s Dani Jackson tucked comfortable in the middle for over a mile. As the race drew near two miles, the pack thinned. Cunningham, Justice, Jenks and Diefenbach took control of the race with 800 meters remaining and never looked back. This was an easy race for the Lady Torreys of LJCD. On the boys’ side, this was a big showdown between the top two teams in the Coastal Conference. Dare I say “the clash of the titans”? Somehow that just doesn’t sound right when you’re talking about some of the smallest schools in San Diego! La Jolla Country Day has dominated this conference for the last several years. Tri-City Christian came into this season with their best team ever and with hopes of an undefeated season in Conference competition. As the boys’ came across the first mile, there was a huge pack of about a dozen runners on the narrow trail of UCSD’s Eucalyptus Grove. At two miles, Tri-City Christian’s Howell, Pfeil and Keller had broken open a 20-30 meter lead as the rest of the pack began to break apart. With 800 meters to go, the Eagles still had the 1-2-3 spots, but Sedwitz and Kiefhaber from LJCD were closing. Behind them, it was all Torrey blue for as far as the eye could see it seemed. With 200 meters to go, Howell and Pfeil secured their 1-2 finish, but Sedwitz had moved on Keller. Sedwitz edged into 3rd place and held Keller off ensuring his team the close victory. The two teams meet again in the Coastal Conference Championships at Kit Carson Park on November 14. GIRLS- 16. Mercedes Hanline, PRE 26.37 Team Scores:
