Inland Empire Heats Up!
It’s not a fall heat wave that is causing such a stir among cross country aficionados, but the 3rd annual running of the Inland Empire Challenge. This tournament, called an invitational in cross country lingo, pits of the finest teams in the state from San Bernardino and Riverside Counties against each other in head to head competition at Cucamonga Guasti Regional Park in Ontario. The meet, a joint effort by Canyon Springs, Rancho Cucamonga, and Los Osos High Schools, began in 2001 with 823 runners from the Inland Empire. This year’s event, Co-Sponsored by the City of Ontario, is expected to draw over twice as many runners from more than 50 teams with an expected 3,000+ spectators. Spectators will not have to be Cross Country runners themselves to watch a majority of the race. The eighteen races scheduled will be run on a course that is unusual among most: it features the ability to watch nearly 95% of the entire race with a minimum of movement on the part of the spectators. This year’s Boys’ Sweepstakes race features the powerhouse Don Lugo boy’s team looking to settle once and for all who is the top ranked team in the State as they run against Murrieta Valley, Rancho Cucamonga, and Upland, four of the top 10 ranked teams in CIF SS Division I. Sultana and Diamond Bar, La Sierra, Canyon Springs, Hemet, and Rancho Verde, all highly considered schools in the Inland Empire, will join them in their quest to claim bragging rights over which county is the best. The Girls’ Sweepstakes race features a dual between two of the strongest teams in the state, one each from the two counties. Sultana narrowly defeated Murrieta Valley High by just 39 seconds last year. Both teams look to be just a strong again this year with Kelsey Delagardelle, Stacy Tabuena, and Danielle Varella leading Sultana. Liza Pascuito is joined by freshman phenomenon, Liana Boucher in leading Murrieta Valley to the top Division I Ranking in CIF SS. Rancho Cucamonga looks to unveil Natalie Pichetti, a Footlocker finalist from 2002, to compliment Brenda Martinez, CIF 1600 finalist. Both Los Osos High Schools and Canyon Springs join special guest Iolani HS from Honolulu, Hawaii in establishing the Inland Empire’s pecking order. Racing will begin at 7:30 am, Saturday, October 11th as teams compete in various divisions (Large Schools, Medium sized, and Small Schools).
