The sixth annual CLC got underway in full strength on Saturday morning on October 4, 2003 without a hitch! With the smaller field this year – due to the Ukiah Invite and the new CLC date, the 10 or so high schools competing, along with half a dozen junior high – middle schools, the CLC-VI ran beautifully in the cooler weather and was full of quality runners and teams from all over the area.

Leading the way in the varsity ranks was Clayton Valley in the Boys and Novato in the Girls, along with the host team Antioch Panthers doing quite well, taking a couple of seconds place team finishes. In the VG’s race, the Novato Hornets looked strong on this course with four Girls in the top ten packed closely together, all within 35 seconds of each other! They took the team title competition easily away from the Panthers by 11 points. Antioch Freshman runner Mellie Regalado entertained the home crowd by taking the individual crown in a speedy sub-15 timing of 14:55, 11 seconds ahead of her competition Adiam Wonas of James Logan.

The VB’s race was even closer in the team standings. The Clayton Valley Eagles flew through the course with four runners in the top ten, showing everyone why they are ranked in NCS Division I. The Panther Boy’s came up a few points short with 31 points, three shy of Clayton’s 28, but looked quite good stacking six of their runners within the top 15. California standout Yosef Ghebray remained on top of his “game”, as he has most of the 2003 campaign, by storming the hilly course in 10:58! Ghebray shattered the course record set by his brother Giliat Ghebray of 11:12 back in 2001.

The JVB’s race was interesting enough! James Logan was disqualified for “stacking” their top varsity-quality runners in this race. After the DQ, the host team Panthers captured the crown led by a record breaking performance from Justin Tracy of Antioch in 12:32. In fact, there were three course record breaking performances this year. The third came in the JVG’s race with Erica Bundensen of Dixon High running a speedy 15:15, breaking the JVG’s course record by six seconds. The Panther JVG’s narrowly took the team title with 40 points ahead of James Logan’s 43 and Deer Valley’s 44.

Next year’s CLC-VII will be on the same Saturday – October 2, 2004 – until then good luck in 2003!
