Clairemont Boys Cross Country was a household name in the 1970's, with the likes of Dale Fleet, Dave Harper, and Fletcher Thornton. However, the girls team has had but a few individual successes over the years, and the best team performance was a 1999 SDSCIF Division four runner up effort. Unfortunately for the lady cheiftains, the section only sent one team to the state meet in their division.
This year things look quite optimistic, led by senior captain Judy Jimenez (two time harbor league champion and two time state meet competitor individually). the cheiftans also return varsity runners Jade Fabares, Nicole Telles, and Eva Gonsalez. Notable new additions include super freshman sensation Eva Garcia-Mayers, track veteran Erika Julien who has played volleyball for the past three years, Coral Bonner, Jessica Taylor, and Sara Groesbeck.
Through five races frosh star Garcia-Mayers has won four out of five races, with an average margin of victiory of 45 seconds including the frosh/soph Dana Hills and Woodbridge races. She finished fourth overall on the 2.7 mile hilly course (17:28) in the small schools invitational after falling at the bottom of the CIF hill. Team-mates; Jimenez finished 6th overall in 17:40, Telles 20th 19:04, Julien 21st (19:05), and sophmore Coral Bonner ran the race of her life to finish 35th (20:20) normally their seven runner scoring in the five position to give Clairemont a narrow 33-39 victory over the favored USDHS team whose returning star Molly O'Toole won the race in 17:11 over Mountain Empires Paula Schanes 2nd 17:13, and La Jolla Country Day's La Toya Cunningham 17:22.
Clairemont coach Seab Stevenson said " this is not only the strongest team I've ever had, but also the deepest. If we can just stay healthy I like our chances to vy for a state meet berth in division three. Preseason favorites in SDS girls division III look to be Valley Center, La Jolla, and USDHS." I concur with coach Stevenson and look forward to a bright and prosporous season for their team.
