The Buffalo Chips Intermediate Girls team defeated 12 other teams from
around the country to become the first-ever youth team from the Buffalo
Chips (and probably the first-ever youth team from the Sacramento area) to
win a team USATF National XC Championship. (In 2000 in Reno, Caitlin Chock
became the youth team? first ever individual National Champion.) USATF
designates the Top 25 in each Junior Olympic races as All-Americans. The
Buffalo Chips placed 4 in the Top 25 and 5 in the Top 27 to crush the
Cornhusker Flyers of Nebraska 41-124. Finishing in order for the Buffalo
Babes were 5th- Kim Crouch (Div III section champion), 10th- Katie Hartman
(of state champion St. Francis), 17th- Mariya Townswick (of Metro League
champion and D1 section runner-up Woodland HS), 24th- Erin Wachter (first
state XC qualifier ever from Cordova HS), and 27th- Megan Alexander (of St.
Francis). The Buffalo Chips did not miss the services of one of their heavy
hitters Natalie White of Oak Ridge, who was unable to attend. Winner
Collier Lawrence of Reno HS was the Nevada state 4A champion and her sister
Marie was the winner of the Junior Olympic Youth Girls division (born in
88-89).

Buffalo Chips Young Women
Dallon Williams, Turlock HS
Sarah Krtil, St. Francis HS
Megan Cearley, Woodland HS
Christina Sanchez, St. Francis HS
Caitlin Morgan, Union Mine HS
Tina Firouz, Benicia HS
Janis Cannon, Rocklin HS

The Buffalo Chips Young Women's Team ( finished in 2nd place, just
getting edged 27-33 by the Indiana All-Stars. The Chips had 5 of the Top 21
in the race but could not overcome a team which consisted of 3 of Indiana's
Top 10 runners (from Indiana HS State Meet results). In order of finish for
the all-senior Buffalo Babes YW team and earning USATF All-American status
were 7th- Dallon Williams (Division I runner-up from Turlock HS and 7th at
the state meet), 8th- Sarah Krtil (Division III runner-up and state team
champion from St. Francis), 13th- Megan Cearley (Metro League Champion from
Woodland HS), 20th- Christina Sanchez (#1 runner at the state meet for St.
Francis), and 21st- Caitlin Morgan of Union Mine (who ran 19:19 at state).
Tina Firouz of Benicia HS just missed the Top 25 at #27.

The times in all races were exceeding slow due to the wicked wind, soft
surface, numerous sharp turns, and repeated hills. Very important to get a
good warm-up or the runners would tie up due to the biting cold.

They had a great time during the brief time they were in Atlanta and raced
very, very hard. The girls and their HS coaches deserve all the credit.
Coach Jim Wachter (Cordova HS XC Coach) was the coach during this period.
