The weather report stated that at race time, the temperature soared hovered between 90 and 95 degrees with 30 mph wind gusts and less than 10% humidity. The conditions were brutal over the hilly 5K course for the Coastal Conference on Friday. With many athletes falling over or “losing their lunch” as they crossed the line, times were severely affected to say the least. In spite of the difficult conditions, La Jolla Country Day arrived ready to dominate - and dominate is what they did. Winning all the team championship trophies, this program has not only become a force to recon with in the San Diego Section, but also has become a threat at the State level. In the girls’ race, we knew that it would be a tough competition between Seniors Marie Raffray from San Dieguito Academy and Lauren Swigart from La Jolla Country Day. The two girls went out at a blistering pace for the conditions and ran their first mile under 6 minutes. Raffray took charge of the race coming off of the monster hill just past the first mile mark and never looked back. Raffray also earned the Conference Athlete of the Year honor. In the boys’ race, it was Athlete of the Year Garrett Metcalf from Tri-City Christian who led the charge alone from start to finish. Teammate Mitch Howell found himself caught in the web of La Jolla Country Day’s group. Sophomore Lex Kiefhaber came out on top in that battle with Howell the only athlete to separate LJCD’s pack. With a mere 27 seconds separating LJCD’s first through fifth runner, this team will undoubtedly win the CIF Championships for the San Diego Section in Division IV. Below are the final Coastal Conference standings, which are based on the regular season records (50%) and championships results (50%). GIRLS 1. La Jolla Country Day 2. San Dieguito Academy 3.
