League Finals
La Mirada Regional Park, 3.0 miles, Friday, November 8, 2002
A soggy day at the park, as athletes braved the hills, mud & a constant
downpour of rain.
Boys Varsity:
After forfeiting all league duals, Downey high was faced with a must-win
situation to make playoffs as a team. Their runners made a gallant effort
as they took the 1st, 3rd & 4th places up front. But they just didn't
have enough after that as Paramount went 2-5-6-7-9 to seal a 5th league
title with 29 points. Gahr, behind at the half-way point, come on strong
over the final mile to move into 3rd over Warren. Senior, Jose Casillas
(Dow) was the individual winner (for the 2nd year in a row) by 28 sec.
after shadowing 2nd place finisher, Senior, Danny Luna (Par) through first
2 1/2 miles.
Girls Varsity:
Warren once again dominated the league with their underclassmen, going
1-5 up front, with 8th & 10th to round out their 7 runners. Gahr avenged
a first dual meet loss to Paramount to earn a 2nd place tie in the league
standings. Sophomores, Robyn Guggiana (War) & Evelyn Navarro (War)
battled back & forth throughout the course until Robyn opened up a
7 sec. gap in the final 800m to earn her first league title.
