Meet Summary - Kirby Lee
Poly High has won three CIF state Division I boys cross country titles
and five Southern Section championships since the Jackrabbits began their
reign atop the Moore League in 1996.
Poly added another accomplishment in Thursday's Moore League finals at
Hollydale Park with a sweep of the top seven places to win with a perfect
score of 15 points. Millikan was second with 67 points.
It was an unprecedented seventh Moore League title for Poly, the state's
top-ranked Division I team. Lakewood edged Wilson, 88-89, with a team
without a senior among its top seven.
Poly had twice scored 16 points and they took the first three places in
last year's meet. Talk began circulating among the team about taking the
first seven places this year after the Jackrabbits had six of the first
seven and seven of the first eight in the first two league meets.
It became reality on Thursday behind the surprise victory of senior Kevin
Word in 14 minutes, 58 seconds over the relatively flat 2.98-mile course
over grass and cement trails. Junior Ulices Pina and senior Kevin Brulois,
who finished first and second in the first two league meets, were second
and third in 15:11 and 15:19.
``It was his day today,'' Pina said about Word.
Seniors Hugo Aguilar (15:20), Luis Ruiz (15:21), Edward Giles (15:32)
and Johnny Villarreal (15:36) completed the sweep. It was a particularly
satisfying victory for Word, who finished sixth in the first league meet
after spraining his ankle.
``We also compete against each other,'' Words said. ``Coming into practice,
we were pointing guys out and asking `Why didn't you catch that guy that
broke up our top seven?' We knew we had the potential to do it but I was
kind of surprised when it worked out that I won.''
It was also a benchmark for Wilson senior Glennis Scott on an cool afternoon
of intermittent rain.
Scott held off sophomore teammate, 18:26 to 18:27, to become the first
to repeat as girls champion in 10 years. Erica Sumi of Wilson was the
last runner to win consecutive Moore League titles in 1991 and 1992.
Wilson, buoyed by the 1-2 finish of Scott and Gold, defeated Poly for
the team title, 20-39. It became a virtual dual meet with Wilson and Poly
combining for the top 13 places.
Wilson had seven of the top 10 with freshman Michelle Gray (18:29) and
senior Marina Coelho (18:35) in fourth and fifth and sophomore Amber Rollo
(18:57), junior Casie Mota (18:59) and junior Jasmine Collins (19:00)
in eighth, ninth and 10th.
Poly was led by sophomore Gabrielle Bournes (18:25), a first-year cross
country runner who went out for the team for conditioning for soccer and
as an 800-meter runner for track. Junior Laura Hiruma (18:40) and sophomore
Samantha Allen (18:48) were sixth and seventh for the Jackrabbits.
The girls race turned into another battle between Scott and Gold, who
split victories in the first two league meets.[ep
As they have all season, both runners made a vow to run their separate
races instead of running together. Scott led most of the way and by as
much as 50 meters before Gold put on a furious surge over the final quarter
mile.
``It felt like it was forever to get to the finish line,'' Scott said.
``(Gold) pushed me a lot. If you run together, nobody is going to run
fast. You're both going to run the same pace and nobody is going to get
out there and go. When one person is in the front, it helps you go faster
and everybody is chasing each other. It's a team thing.''
