Mountain View League Results (SS) - Jurupa Valley HS - 11/06/02 - Mike Barbee/Will Jacobsmeyer

On the girls' side, three teams had a chance to win with a mile and a half to go. A pack of four Corona runners made an aggressive move approaching the mile to go mark and it would prove to be the move that broke the race wide-open. Corona's Molly Binns, Alma Escobar, Kelley Floyd and Mandy Garcia took control of the pace and took turns making surges at the front and 3 Norco and 3 Santiago runners fell off the back. Corona's Ayla Greenberg was behind the pack and spent the last mile picking off each runner who fell off the pace. With 400 to go, as the runners approach the track, the race for first was long over, with Jurupa's Rebecca Juarez finishing 40 seconds in front of the next runner. In the last 400 meters, Corona's Kelley Floyd opened up a 7 second gap with a tenacious kick, while Santiago's super-frosh Mallory Smith took home 3rd. 4th went to Corona's mighty-mite Alma Escobar and 5th went to Corona's lone senior, Molly Binns. La Sierra's Judy Alvarado took 6th to ensure her a trip to CIF Prelims. Corona put their 4th and 5th across the line next, sealing the victory for the Panthers.
The course is 3.0 miles(or so Jurupa says) very sandy

Boys side of things...
From the start, Corona's Josh Schneider tried to run away with the top honors. His aggressive front running would prove to keep everyone behind him except La Sierra's Matt Kern. In the chase pack, La Sierra had a very heavy presence. All five of La Sierra's varsity were running relaxed, with Corona's pack scatter in front of the pack and behind the pack. Santiago's Brandon Spears and Norco's Andrew Davies were the other runners giving chase. With about 3 quarters of a mile left in the race, Matt Kern regained contact with Josh Schneider and the two ran side by side for a quarter mile. La Sierra's super miler Kern pulled away seemingly without effort and ran away with a 15 second victory! Schneider finished in 2nd. From then on, it was ALL LA SIERRA! The Eagle's Austin Langley(3) Danny Guy(4) and Elio Haro(5) put Corona's hopes of sharing the league title away. Corona would place Cyrus Bastani and Chris Granger the next 2 spots. Santiago's Brandon Spears placed 8th, Corona's Chris Bowden 9th and La Sierra put the last nail in the coffin with 5-man Sean Wyman taking 10th. Norco's Andrew Davies placed 11th and Corona' Eric Larios ending the Panther scoring with a 12th place finish.
