DE ANZA LEAGUE
At Yucaipa High 11/06/02 - Jay Stepp
DeAnza League Finals held at Yucaipa. Weather was in the high 60’s
with a slight breeze. Perfect day for running. On the boys side, things
went according to plan in the team competition. Beaumont completed its
undefeated season, winning the finals in a team time of 85:07. Brian Baker
(Beaumont) pulled off a mild upset over Craig Hall (Big Bear) to win the
meet in 15:43. Nick Tyerman (Yucca Valley) Jorge Duran (San Jacinto),
along with Baker & Hall, came through the 1st mile together. Baker
started his move and didn’t look back, on his way to a 13 sec. Victory
over Hall. Craig won the first 2 meets of the season, while Brian placed
2nd in both. Both are looking to secure a spot at the state meet. It’s
going to be a good individual battle in D4 with these two in the mix.
On the girl’s side, Big Bear secured their 1st ever league title.
Beating the defending champions from Beaumont by 27 pts. Yucca Valley
was 3rd with 54. In what would be considered a “David vs. Goliath”
race for the individual title, senior Jessica Horn of Big Bear won the
event. In the race, 7 girls were looking to break 20:00. But a wrong turn
early on cost the leaders valuable time, and Jessica took charge and never
relinquished the lead. The wrong turn cost the leaders a 1:00 to 1:30.
Jessica was the 1st girl to run for Big Bear 4 years ago when Big Bear
didn’t have girls XC. She came out because her brother Kevin was
running. She started her career running 24:00. Growth spurts caused her
to struggle the next 2 years. Her training became more consistent and
she began to flourish this year. Coach Mickey Hall calls her the most
un-selfish runner he has ever coached. She is a true team leader in every
sense of the word. She has done wonders for our program and she will be
extremely missed next year. Congratulations Jessica.
