Nellie Giammona and Shawn Lawrence (Bear River) starred in their school's 10/12 Invite

Bear River's Shawn Lawrence won the Overall (Large & Small School Combined
Sweepstakes Division) Varsity Boys race in a time of 16:49 at the Bear River
Cross Country Invitational Saturday. Lawrence pulled away from Woodland's
Pedro Tejeda in the final half-mile to lead the host team to the Small
School team title with 34 points, along with exceptional efforts of other
Bruin squad members Joe Rohm who placed 8th in 18:11; Greg Rhodes, Pat
Lohse, and Zeke Giammona, who placed 23rd -24th in times of 18:57, 18:58,
and 18:59 respectively. Aaron Raynsford and Chris Hansen completed Bear
River's top seven, finishing in 45th (19:58) and 47th (20:08).

"Not only did we finish first in the Small School Boys division, but we
placed second in the Sweepstakes with 81 points (all Small and Large teams
combined)," said Bruin Coach Nick Vogt, "Our first through 5th runners
grouped well as team in the top 25 per cent of the field throughout the
entire race."

Davis High School was first in the sweepstakes race with 53 points (ahead of
Bear River's 81 points) and First in the Large School race with 36 points,
outdistancing Roseville with 116 points (Sweepstakes) and 67 points (Large).
Sheldon was 3rd (Large) and 4th (Sweepstakes). Steven Middaugh of Sheldon
was 3rd (17:32); Josh Courtney of Roseville was 4th (17:41), and Taylor
Gross of Davis was 5th in 17:47.

Colfax placed second in the Small School Team race, led by 10th and 13th
place finishers, Mile McCammon (18:14) and Max Stockton (18:20).

The Bear River Girls Team placed second in the Small School Varsity Race
with 35 points, just behind first place Colfax (30 points). Nellie Giammona
(Bear River) was the first Small School division finisher with a 21:41
clocking, easily outdistancing Colfax's Megan Wollenberg (22:37). Lady
Bruin Michelle Wheeler placed 3rd in 23:46, followed by teammates April
Saltenberger (8th), Katie Redmond (9th), and Katie Tyrrell (14th).

In the Large School Varsity Girl's race, Oakridge's Natalie White crossed
the line in 18:33, more than a minute faster than Placer's Kim Crouch
(19:47). Placer, however, easily won the team title with 23 points over
runner-up Del Oro with 46 points. Katie Vaughan (Placer) was 3rd in 20:50;
Rachel Bates (Del Oro) 4th in 20:02; Rachel Gardner (Del Oro) 5th in 20:03;
Amanda Gilming (Placer) 6th in 20:11; and Andrea Gruber and Keri Buck of
Placer in 8th & 9th in times of 20:37 and 20:43.

The Bear River Junior Varsity Boys, led by Jon Zisko's 5th place finish of
19:48, placed 2nd with 47 points behind Sheldon's 21. Chris McCurdy of
Atwater was first in 19:08 and Peter Bernard of Sheldon was 2nd in 19:34.
Other Bruin runners were Matt Waechter (9th in 20:22); Glen Wheeler (10th in
21:29); Nathan Youngman (13th in 22:03); and Ray Giammona (15th in 22:24).
